JOHN DAVIES COURT

Townsville Basketball is incredibly pleased and proud to announce the naming of our main court in honour of a life member of our great association in recognition and celebration of 64 years of dedication to the Townsville Basketball and Basketball Community across Queensland. The show court at Townsville Basketball will forever be known as the “John Davies Court” in honour of a man who is quite possibly the greatest volunteer in Australian Basketball.

John’s involvement with Townsville Basketball began in 1954 as an U18 representative player and has continued through to the present day with his continued contributions as a volunteer on a daily basis at Townsville Basketball. John has served and contributed at all levels of Basketball in Townsville as a player, coach, referee, administrator, board member and was recognised with life member of Townsville Basketball in 1966. He has been a constant at Townsville Basketball as a volunteer to all facets of the association. John has been:

  • A constant figure on the score bench
  • A constant figure in the stadium
  • A constant source of advice
  • A constant attendee when jobs needed to be done
  • A constant source of TBI Historical facts and figures
  • The Constant and quintessential Games Commissioner
  • A constant role model for those coming through the association
  • A constant keeper of the standards be that refereeing or scoring or pretty much anything basketball
  • A constant supporter across the generations
  • A constant Husband, Father and Grandfather

Townsville Basketball is proud to bestow this level of recognition to John in the present, allowing him, his family, his grandchildren and all future generations the opportunity to enjoy and admire the achievement of this great man.

As a man who has never sought the limelight or recognition for his services, the depth of John’s achievements and contribution to Townsville Basketball will not be known by all who have been involved in TBI throughout his involvement. A small sample of John’s major achievements include:

  • Life Member of TBI in 1966
  • Life Member of Giants Basketball Club
  • Life Member of the Referee Association
  • Life Member of Townsville Fire
  • Townsville Bulletin Sports Achiever of the Year in 1995
  • BQ Volunteer of the Year in 2002
  • 2006 Townsville City Council Volunteer Sportsperson of the year
  • Male Official of the Year by BQ 2007
  • QBL 30 Years of service in 2016

We would like to thank John for his constant and continuous involvement in our great association with the recognition of his court naming. It is no small feat for any individual to contribute what he has to any organisation over such a sustained period of time. We look forward to watching the future generations of Townsville Basketball grow and develop under the bright lights on the John Davies Court.
