Round 12 saw 4 games at Mahoney.
The early morning game saw the development game between Balmain and Macquarie University. The Warriors enjoyed the game with both sides fielding 13 players each.
The second match saw Newtown take on Easts. Easts were brave but simply met a very hungry opponent rehearsing their finals performance and was outclassed 29.18.192 to 0.0.0. The goals were shared amongst the team with multiple goal-scorers with an awesome third quarter of 9 goals.
The third match saw the Bondi Shamrocks took on St George. The Shamrocks knew if they won, they could put themselves in the box seat for the final 4th spot and instead of their usual lethargic first quarter they came out with seven goals. From there St George tightened up and played a lot better but the Shamrocks recorded a 16.7.103 to 3.4.22 win. Those who played well were (Dragons) Carlee Dreeves, Louise Glasgow and Ashlee McClure (Shamrocks) Kate Woodlands, Sandra Ryan, Dee Wall, Aimee-Louise Hazley and Una McKay.
The fourth match was held in twilight conditions with two fired up teams. For Sydney University it was their grand final, a loss would now mean they were out of contention for the finals while for West they needed to continue their momentum for a top two position. Accordingly both teams were fierce for the ball with no quarter asked and no quarter given. It took a while for the first goal but the Wolves asserted themselves with two goals for the first quarter to no score from Uni. In the second quarter both teams scored 2.2 to be at the main break Wolves 4.6.30 to Uni 2.2.14. In the 3rd quarter Uni realising that the next 40 minutes could determin ethe direction of their season came out with vigour to outscore the Wolves 2.0.12 to 0.4.4 to have the game at a thread 4.10.34 to 4.2.26. An early goal by Sydney Uni gave them hope to trail by a point but the Wolves counted on their fighting spirit to score two goals to kill the game and win 7.12.48 to 5.3.33. Those who stood out were (Syd Uni) Monica Chew, Mai Nguyen, Krysten Winkley and Gianna Abbonizio and (Wolves) Kaya Lyons, Tricia Muller, Talei Owen, Christine Macdonald and Michaela Ekman.
To quote the words of Dylan Thomas, Sydney Uni gave it their all ... "Do not go gentle into that good night, Rage Rage against the dying of the light". Well done to both teams on a great match contested.
The result means that the Shamrocks have sealed the final 4th position. The permutations means that Newtown can now go no lower than 3rd and the highest the Shamrocks can reach is 2nd. Balmain and Wests can cover all possibilities within the top 4. The St George Dragons and Sydney University also can also potentially swap between 5th and 6th place.
