Round 10 Match Summary
Saturday saw the launch of the “Respect the Game” Initiative where all players and coaches signed an agreement to respect the officialdom of the game.
For all our spectators and fans, the SWAFL Committee felt that respect towards umpires had declined, so it was time that all stakeholders had a role into improving the game. Umpires would work on better communication, consistency between the umpires and
clarity to the players and sideline observers in terms of signals.
We thank Sydney University for running the barbeque during the four matches at Mahoney, your food was delicious.
Game one saw 1st
placed Newtown take on 3rd placed Balmain.
In the first quarter in the early morning cold chill with the wind pushing down the brick wall end. Rebecca Burridge started the scoring with an airkick off the ground to start the first goal of the day. Balmain with the wind responded with goals through Christinia Matthews having a goal snap right food and then Belinda Pride snapped truly from a very tight left angle. Injuries started to be sustained by the Breakaways due to some huge hits. Dockers had more of the play but were inaccurate due to snapping without taking their time to balance. Quarter time was Balmain 2.5.17 to 1.0.6.
In the 2nd quarter Newtown came back with the wind to score through Verna Iles (2) and Krystle Thompson. The Dockers had their chances but failed to score the goals. The half time score was Newtown 4.3.27 to 2.8.20.
The 3rd and 4th quarters went with the wind and at 3rd quarter time it was Balmain 5.10.40 and Newtown 5.3.33. In the final quarter Balmain hit out early against early and survived a late Breakaways onslaught. Newtown had received a kick-out infringement for the Balmain runner being inside the zone when the siren sounded. However Newtown were unable to score from the edge of the 50m arc. The goal umpires conferred and there was a dispute where the goal umpires could not agree on the score. The SWAFL Committee is now liooking into this game.
The Respect the Game player nominated by the umpires was Natalie Redford (Newtown).
In game 2, 4th placed Bondi played 5th placed Sydney University.
In the first quarter Sydney University used the wind smartly and kicking to loose targets to score goals to lead at the first break 3.0.18 to Bondi 0.2.2. In the 2nd quarter the Shamrocks decided to hit back and use the wind to score 3.1.19 to nil score to lead at the main break 3.3.21 to 3.0.18. The 3rd quarter was crucial where there was many forward entries against the wind by the Shamrocks but stoutly resisted by Sydney Uni defence. The same was to also apply by the Shamrocks defence. And this was to be the telling difference as each side only scored one point each but Uni hadn't taken advantage of the wind to increase their score. The final quarter started off with Renee Harrington scoring first to put Uni in the lead but that was to be the last University score as the Shamrocks put on 3.4 in the last quarter to win 6.8.44 to 4.4.25.
Both teams played with skill across the board, Sydney University amused the crowd with their shock a frock getup afterwawards. Well done ladies for getting in the spirit of the occasion!
The Respect the Game player nominated by the umpires was Belinda Michaulk (Sydney University).
In game 3, Wests played Mac Uni in the development game
In game 4, 7th placed UNSW-Easts hosted 6th placed St George.
Both teams struggled to field a full team calling in favours and friends from other sports in order to win this very game which was there for the taking.
St George running towards the Golf Course End started brightly kicking 2.2.14 in the first quarter to 0.1.1. In the 2nd quarter both sides equaled themselves out but with a couple of behinds it was at the main break St George 3.5.23 Easts 1.1.7. However the 2nd quarter was marred by a broken thumb by Jane Freeland (St George Dragons) causing an umpire interchange with John Freeland off and Jason King on. Thanks Jason for filling in! In the 3rd quarter both sides repeated the 2nd quarter with St George leading at the 3rd quarter time break. 4.8.32 to 2.2.14. In the final term Easts found a new sense of urgency probably believing that this would be one of their last shots for glory. St George playing not to their high level standards of football to win 4.10.34 to 4.2.26.
The Respect the Game players were Erin Burns (St George Dragons) and Sarah Court (UNSW-ES Stingrays).
In terms of the ladder Newtown are 1st, Balmain taking advantage of the Wests Development Game are now 2nd, Wests 3rd, Shamrocks 4th, Sydney Uni 5th, St George 6th and UNSW-Easts 7th.
