After the exhibition match between Balmain Dockers and Macquarie University where some Dockers players were on loan, the match between the Newtown Breakaways and the UNSW-ES Stingrays commenced in the drizzling rain.
Once again the foundation of the Breakaways victory was laid on in the first quarter where the Breakaways did a blitzkerg on the Stingrays and lightish rain to score 5.2.32. In the second quarter in the rain which had now increased to it's torrential status they added another 3.1.19 to lead at halftime 8.3.51 to no score. A few words by Coach Ben for the Stingrays to concentrate on the their own strengths saw the best ever quarter from the Stingrays being miserly with Breakaways attack conceding just 10 points in the premiership quarter and scoring a behind. In the final quarter Newtown scored two more goals to run out 75 point winners with the final score being 11.10.76 to the Stingrays 0.1.1.
Those that impressed in no particular order from the Stingrays who tried hard all day were: Jo Willesee, Cherie Harmer, Carrie Downey and Jenna Lineham and the Breakaways players were: Natalie Redford, Natasha Devlin, Krystle Thompson and Nicole Roach.
The ladder has now broken away from the bunch and has been clearly stratified with Newtown 1st on 24 pts, Wests 2nd on 20 pts, Balmain 3rd a superior % over Sydney University in 4th place each on 16pts. A game behind is the Bondi Shamrocks in 5th place on 12pts. St George in 6th on 8 pts and UNSW-ES in 7th yet to open their accoun.
Golden Boot news: Marie Keating (Shamrocks) continues to lead on 23 goals, 2nd place is Belinda Pride (Balmain) 15 goals and now in 3rd place Ashlee McClure (St. George Dragons) 12 goals. Bec Burridge (Newtown) is on 11 goals in 4th place and rounding out our double figure goalkickers in 5th place are Amelia Dever (Sydney University) and Rachel Mercer (Wests) on 10 goals.
