Friday night action saw Sydney University hosting the Western Wolves at Mahoney Park. With the Wolves hurting after their loss to Newtown and Sydney University being impressive at the early stages of the season, it was a clash to saviour. There was a huge crowd at Mahoney with friends and partners there to observe the two teams in action.
The first quarter saw Wests dominant possession but failed to convert whilst Sydney Uni took their chances and scored the only goal of the quarter by Amelia Dever to led at the quarter time break 1.1.7 to Wests yet to score. After the quarter time break, it was a contest for possession with Cynthia Dufaut snapping from the left pocket to score the Wolves first goal, with Amelia kicking another goal. Wests coninutined to win more possession but were a bit wasteful with their inaccuracy plus Sydney University rushing the ball for the half time score to be Sydney University 2.1.13 to the Wolves 1.5.11.
In the premiership quarter, the Wolves showed what they were made of with and their famous never-say-die spirit that absent coach Jason King would have been proud of; for they showed renewed intensity for the ball. This was reflected in the scoreboard as they outscored the Bombers for the quarter. Goals were recorded by Ashlee Morgan (Sydney Uni) kicking from in front after Wests had over-encroached the mark. Georgia Woodyard (Wests) took a packmark at the top of the goal square and converted truly. Wests superstar and probably a candidate for rhinoplasty - ruck Georgia Woodyard managed to get her nose smashed two weeks in a row - mmm you're modelling was stunning Woody!. Amelia Dever got a hat-track of goals after taking a mark and converting from a 30m angle. Christine Stroop also scored for the Wolves. On the edge of 3/4 time Rachel Mercer took a mark from about 12m out and after the siren goaled truly. The score at 3/4 time was 4.7.31 to the Wolves to the Bombers 4.1.25.
In the final quarter more possession by Wolves resorted in more behinds being scored before Shelley Bates (Wolves) goaled with less than 5 seconds to go. It was a gritty win for the Wolves who showed their fighting quality yet the Bombers were not disgraced pushing the Wolves to the line and can feel proud how far they have pushed the premiers. Those who impressed on Friday night in no particular order were: Krysten Winkley, Libby Fish, Monica Chew, Georgia Woodyard, Talei Owen and Cynthia Dufaut. The final score 5.11.41 to the Wolves, Bombers a gallant second 4.2.26.
On Saturday at Drummoyne Oval, the Balmain Dockers hosted UNSW-Easts Stingrays. Balmain was fired up after losing two in a row and they pledged not to make it three in a row. They responded recording a big comprehensive win and back to showing the famous Dockers style of footy. The match reports I received were that the Dockers scored 3 goals in the first quarter and continued on with the scoring for the rest of the match highlights being the last quarter of 6 goals in the final quarter, with contributions around the ground and not just relying on their usual suspects to perform. It was a great team effort by the Dockers. Commiseration to the Stingrays on a brave performance who tried hard and were outgunned. Bad news that Rachie Paton (Stingrays) suffered ligament damage to her leg and had to be carted off by the ambulance - get well soon! Best for the Dockers in no particular order were Belinda Pride with 6 goals determined to chase Marie Keating of the Bondi Shamrocks hard for the Golden Boot Award (good luck Bee - only 3 goals behind!), Natalie Morgan, Karla Spilarewicz, Kate Fitzsimons and Jackie Buckthought. Final score was the Balmain Dockers 18.10.118 to the Stingrays 1.0.6
Saturday saw the introduction of Pioneer Park, Malabar to SWAFL which is actually a pretty good. ground. It's a bit short probably about 135 meters long but about 80m wide. The landscaping at the ocean end is pretty good and has a carpark next to it. It is hoped in the longterm changerooms or toilets will be built, as the present toilets is a short hike down the hill. Thanks to the Maroubra Saints and we'll look forward to more games there in 2010 apart from the next clash between Newtown Breakaways vs Bondi Shamrocks.
On Saturday afternoon, after the demonstration game between the Bondi Shamrocks and the rapidly improving Macquarie University Warriors the action was between the undefeated Newtown Breakaways and St George Dragons. With both clubs wearing red and white this year, the Dragons had to wear last year Crows strip to avoid the clash. St George were pretty good in defeat, and engaged the Breakaways on their own terms although they would have liked having some reserves - an advantage that the Breakaways had a full bench of 6 reserves. The Breakaways skipped to an early lead kicking with the wind at the end of the first quarter 3.6 to no score.
In the second quarter the Dragons responded with two goals leading to half time scores of 6.7.43 to 2.3.15. In the third quarter the scores at the end was 8.9.63 to 3.4.22. In the final quarter the Dragons rediscovered their form in the final quarter and kicked some long range goals including from Jenya Kalagurgevic and Clare Crewdson from outside the 50m arc (good kick Clare!). Any Dragons hope of scoring enough goals to win the game was killed off by two quick goals by the Breakaways from the centre square clearance team. Highlight of the game was Louise Glasgow's (Dragons) rushed behind which probably was more suited to rugby league than AFL. Those who impressed in no particular order were: (Newtown) Chevvauhn Calver, Nicole Roache, Roxy McGee, Melissa Daley and Tarsha Gale; (St George) Adeline Yaw, Jane Freeland, Christine Coles, Kate O'Brien and Clare Crewdson. Final score was Newtown Breakaways 10.11.71 to St. George 6.7.43.
