On Michelle Daley Shield Day, we had 4 games of trial football.
Game 1: Macquarie University vs Bondi Shamrocks
The first ever match for these newest entrants to the league caused a few players from other clubs to come early and have a look. Macquarie University were a few players short, so the Bondi Shamrocks loaned a few players to equal up including last yearâÂÂs leadinggoal kicker Marie Keating. However the newest players to the league showed their determination and grittiness with some forward drives into the Warriors forward line. Especially impressive was the roving of Mac Uni centre square
pack. The Shamrocks had some promising passages of play and contested the ball at every contest. Especially pleasing was the champagne football moments sweeping from the backline to the forward line resulting in a goal. I think the rough score was 6.3.39 to 4.5.29
Game 2: Belconnen Magpies vs Sydney University Bombers.
Belconnen - an ACTWAFL team (pictured) made the 3 hour trip up north to play 2 SWAFL teams. In the first game of 15 minutes each Belconnen played Sydney University. With Sydney University fielding 60% new players they had a very credible win by 7 points.
Game 3: Belconnen vs St. George
In game 3, Belconnen played St. George in a game of 4 quarters of 10 minutes. Any doubts that Belconnen might fade due to tiredness or heat were disproved as Belconnen won by 19 points. St. George can take a lot out of the game with some new players showing lots of promise.
Game 4: Michelle Daley Shield Game. Western Wolves vs Balmain Dockers.
The grand final rematch had Wests with a lot of new players in the team and Balmain missing 10 of their experienced players. Less than a minute into the game, Wests scored a behind showing that the summer had not diminished their skills. Balmain tried hard but Wests had weight of possession and made their presence on the scoreboard. The final score was 5.3.38 to Wests to Balmain 1.8.14. Both teams know they will have to improve but once they get their full teams back on board theyâÂÂll be hard to beat. We look forward to their round 1 clash against each other.
Conclusion: A lot of money was raised by the BBQ and the raffle for the RPA Transplant Unit, many thanks to Belconnen who bought a book
of raffle tickets knowing that they wouldnâÂÂt be around to pickup the prizes. Also thanks to Wests and Balmain who donated many generous prizes â itâÂÂs good to see the league contributing generously to charity.
