Macquarie University Warriors have four teams in the Sydney AFL and with the assistance of former Western Wolf Belinda Harrison, are hoping to get a side up and running to compete in the Sydney Women's AFL in 2009.
Harrison, a NSW Blues representative, has been talking with the club over the past 12 months and is excited about the women's team getting off the ground next year.
"At the end of the day, I just want to play footy close to where I live and help grow the game out in this area. Mac Uni Warriors have been so supportive of the concept and of having the women join them at the club. We've got a training ground sorted, a committee willing and ready, sponsors who support the club... all we need now is some more players to get this off ground!" says Harrison.
SWAFL President, Jemma Still, recently met up with Harrison and a newbie to the state but not to the game, former Queenslander Janice Virant-Bell to discuss how to make the new team succeed in 2009.
Still says "The expansion of the league to this area will allow the game to be accessible to more players, and girls coming through from the GS Juniors competition. Macquarie Uni allows players from the North Shore, Hills Area and even Parramatta, a home base that is within a 20 minute drive. For our game to continue to grow, we need to establish more teams outside the inner west and eastern suburbs - to get the Warriors off the ground in 2009 is a big priority."
She welcomes the efforts of Harrison and is excited by the interest from Virant-Bell, an experienced AFL player who has recently moved down to Sydney. Virant-Bell is working for the NSW/ACT AFL in a casual development role and will prove to be a valuable asset to the club - not only with her knowledge of the game but also her enthusiasm to help the team start up in 09.
For all those interested, a come and try session will take place at the University Oval (Roger Sheeran Oval), Uni Sports Grounds (Macquarie Uni) on the 20th January, time 6:30pm. For more information, contact Harrison at bel@muafc.com.au.
