The team coached by St George Coach Gary Slowgrove will take on the NSW GAA team which composes many of the Bondi Shamrocks.
If you are interested in playing this game please contact the manager lance2210@yahoo.com ASAP . The manager has contacted many SWAFL players but doesn't have access to everybody and may have missed you. So there are plenty of spots still available but it's on a first come, first served basis. Those who have accepted the invitation are already included in the team.
Details:
When - October 10, Saturday 1pm
Where: Mahoney Park, Marrickville
There will be one training session only held on Wed Oct , Mahoney Park at 6:30pm onwards beforehand to get used to the rules, other players and most importantly the ball!
Last year in the Irish-Australian Cup, a combined SWAFL Team tried hard but were utterly outclassed to lose 49-15. At least we got a new SWAFL Team out of it!
Afterwards at 4pm, the men's (Sydney AFL) will take on the NSW GAA Men's. The afterparty will be held jointly with the men's teams in the evening at Durty Nelly's at Paddington. 9-11 Glenmore Rd, Paddington.
So what's the difference between AFL and International Rules?
Summary of the Rules:
Played on a rectangle field shape like a soccer field.
18 on the field. 17 players and one goal keeper.
How to score
1 pt behind
Imagine rugby goal posts where the goals are.
3 points for over the cross bar
A soccer goal is worth 6 points,
MOST IMPORTANTLY - LIKE SOCCER IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO TOUCHES IT LAST - An own goal is a goal. (no rushed behinds).
Like Soccer - if the ball hits the post it's play on if the ball rebounds back into play unless it goes out (i.e past the line)
Comment: Last year, SWAFL tried too hard to go for the maximum 6 points instead of going to put points on the board while the Gaelic Girls went for the Overs and only tried to score goals when the goalie was out of position.
- Game is 4 qtrs of 20 mins
- After a behind or over is scored something like a soccer goal kick restarts play. After a goal, a ballup in the middle. There is only two members of each team in the middle (i.e ruck and a rover only). Like a netball court, everyone must be in behind the zones except for the two in the middle.
- Marks - ball must travel 20m to be called a mark (extra 5m from AFL).
- A player can only bounce the ball every 15m but a maximum of two bounces before disposing however can do "solos" where you kick the soccerball to yourself. Comment: Best time to tackle the Gaelic Girls!
- Only the goal keeper can dive on the ball, if you dive on the ball - free kick - stay on your feet!!!!
- A shepherd is illegal (blocking an opponent) however you can jostle for the ball through the use of a hip and shoulder.
- Like Soccer, when it goes out on the sideline - the other team gets a free kick. The equivalent of a corner kick is a free kickon the 45m. The equivalent of a goal kick is a goal kick.
- 50m penalty reduced to 20m.
- Penalty kick is the same as the penalty kick in soccer in terms of application.
- Attacking players cannot enter the small rectangle near the goals before the ball. Free kick to be awarded.
- The goal keeper cannot be tackled inside the small rectangle.
