The Cook Islands league team have something of a ‘rebel’ feel about them.
It could be the team’s black hooded uniforms or ‘jimmy’ moustaches which the players and management staff are sporting.
While the team jokingly call their facial hair Jimmy Marurai moustaches, I reckon some of them look like wrestling great incredible Hulk Hogan.
The local members of the league team assembled at the Telecom Sports Arena on Saturday for the Cook Islands flag raising ceremony.
Despite the heat, the team turned out in their black hooded skivvies in a show of unity.
Their uniforms were organised and bought for them by Australian based international rugby league coach and team all rounder (technical advisor, assistant coach, manager) Ina Konito.
Team coach Albert Nicholas says his boys are fit and confident heading into their Pacific Mini Games.
The league competition is scheduled for the last week of the games which Albert says is great because the team can polish up on their game.
Only four teams will contest the league competition medals.
The teams are from Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and the Cooks.
The majority of the team is made up of local players with three players yet to arrive from overseas.
The Cook Islands league team includes Piri Matapo, Mathew Pierre, Spoon Marsters, Bobby Hansen, Kevin Mapu, Clive Nicholas, Pene Trego, (overseas) Trent Poila, Fred Pakitoa and Sema Mataora.
The management team includes coach Albert Nicholas, managers Te Tupu (Lax) Pori and Ina Konito.
