GRAND FINAL REMATCH VS SOUTHERN TIGERS MARCH 24

With a mixture of trepidation and hope, we made the long car trip south, to play for redemption and club pride. We introduced Leah Metcalf to the starting five along with Sam, Tayla, Lauren and Kirsty. Southern opened quickly with a three but a 3 second violation gave us a chance. After some strong defence by Tayla and nice rebounds by Leah and Lauren; Kirsty was fouled and made 1 out of two. Kirsty continued to be on fire with her scoring all game and great team work and accurate passing was a feature of the play. Tayla scored 2 from 2 of her foulshots and Lauren swished in a three. Courtney and Jo came on and Jo was quickly fouled and made the most of it sinking both shots! Sophie stepped on the court and as Courtney played strong defence; Jo made a great score. The lead continued to grow in our favour and at quarter time the score was: 14 to 22.

The starting five were back on and, Kirsty and Lauren opened the scoring. Leah and Sam contributed with great defence including sneaky steals. Lauren pushed through to score, got fouled and made the bonus. Tayla was fouled and made both her shots. Abi and Taylor came on, as Jo was fouled and made 2 from 2. Abi scored again, contributing to an increased lead of now 15; 28 to 43.

Sam led the starting five in the third quarter; with a steal and a lovely three! Tayla, Jo, Sam, Courtney and Leah all contributed to the scoring. Lauren pushed through again to score and we maintained a solid lead with the three quarter score being: 43 to 59.

Lots of passing opened the last quarter; giving Lauren the opportunity to score a three. The girls tried again but Southern weren’t giving up and caused a shot clock violation. Kirsty, Jo and Lauren scored and Leah’s close fierce defence caused her to be called for a fifth foul. A bouncing ball also caused the bench to receive a tech foul on her behalf. The margin was slightly reduced but our girls fought hard to the end with Jo and Kirsty scoring to ensure a resounding win! The final score was 60 to 75. Top scorers were: K Williams 18, J Hill 16, L Metcalf 11 and L Thornett 10 and top rebounders were: K Williams and T Corrigan both with 8.

The game was played in a good spirit and to a very high standard and the girls efforts were very much appreciated by every Rockets fan there. Congratulations girls on a great win, and particularly on keeping your composure when a few spectators lost theirs.

Happy Easter and see you at Hillcrest on April 7 when we celebrate Jo Hill’s 300th game! See the club website/fb page for a fundraising t-shirt.
