Rockets Women in an exciting and close game against Woodville

It was due to be a tightly fought contest and it didn’t disappoint. The match opened with Jo Hill, Shannon McKay, Lauren Badenoch, Kirsty Williams and Shannon Tarran dominating the play. Shannon Tarran opened the scoring and the Rockets fans were excited. Woodville settled and their new import Tavarsha Scott played a starring role. However with good defensive pressure, the Rockets were leading at quarter time, Woodville 11: Rockets 21.

Lauren continued her good form, applying tough defensive pressure and forced turnovers. Opal Mader also, was strong in defence and at half time the turnovers were Woodville 5, Rockets only 8. The bench players: Opal; Sarah Elsworthy; Courtney Hansen and Georgia Green all played their role and contributed to the scoring. In a low scoring, often scrappy half, the Rockets went to the big break leading 32 to 23. The leading scorers were: Tavarsha Scott with 11 and Jo Hill with 6.

The starting 5 started the second half, bringing strong defence, but Woodville seemed fired up. They quickly shot to 34 so the Rockets applied more ball pressure. It was a tough, physical quarter, with many turnovers; Woodville 7 and Rockets 15. The fight back continued from Woodville and they led at three quarter time 49 to 46.

Again Tavarsha Scott was shooting well and North had a big challenge ahead of them. With 4 minutes to go, a timely time out was called by North, as the Woodville lead had blown out to 8 points. Rockets returned to the court determined and started really attacking the basket. This resulted in 8 quick points to Woodville’s 2. Momentum was with the Rockets but with a tech foul for each team being a distraction, the momentum swung back to the Warriors. Jo valiantly scored a 3 pointer, however it was to no avail, as the Rockets ran out of time, leaving the Warriors victors 70 to 66. An exciting and close game which will prove to be a big learning curve for the team.

Our top scorers were: Opal Mader 18pts and Jo Hill with 13 pts and Jo also shooting at 100% from the foul line

Our top rebounders were: Jo Hill with 12 rebounds

Thank you to the supporters and Happy Easter. See you all at Marion on Saturday 2/4.
