New - ZERO Tolerance Policy from BSA towards poor behaviour

In recent times Basketball SA has observed an increase in the poor behaviour of some spectators during its competitions.  This poor behaviour has been directed at officials, players, coaches, BSA staff and other spectators.  While we acknowledge that this is only a small percentage of individuals within the broader basketball community, these incidents of poor behaviour impact on the enjoyment and experience of all participants.

To ensure an ongoing safe and enjoyable playing environment for all players, officials, parents and spectators Basketball SA will implement from 12th October a ‘Zero Tolerance’ Policy aimed at addressing the situations that arise from this poor behaviour.  This policy will supplement the current spectator/parent code of conduct policy.

Recent years have seen an increase in poor behaviour and attitude across many sports and particular junior sports.  Our policy is aimed at eliminating this behaviour and rebuilding a culture of supportive and rewarding behaviour to further encourage and strengthen the sport in general.

The implementation process will be as follows:

  • Notification to Clubs
  • Notification to all officials, Referee Coaches and Court Supervisors – beginning       Monday 28th September via email and written letter
  •  Notification to all stadium and BSA employees - beginning Monday 28th September via email and stadium management
  • Printed copies will be handed out to all participants on entry to each BSA venue/competition during the first 2 weeks of the coming Summer season
  • Copies will be displayed on BSA stadium notice boards
  • Uploaded to BSA website and social media accounts
  • Meetings with stadium staff and officials at each venue during the first 2 weeks of the Summer season

While it is a shame we must go down this pathway as a result of the inappropriate behaviour of a few members, it remains the primary focus of Basketball SA to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all participants and our continued efforts to promote a positive culture where all can enjoy their sport of choice.

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
