Article from Boti Nagy, Oct 13th 2015 (http://www.botinagy.com/blog/flashback-6-june-1975/) –
June 1975
ROOSTERS FLEE CHOP
ADELAIDE: North Adelaide Roosters were bombed by the bigger and better Victorian teams when they skipped across the border to play in Coburg's first invitation tournament.
They lost their three games to Melbourne Tigers 60-109, CYMS Panthers 56-73 and UCA Devils 56-80.
But coach John Horsell was anything but disappoinbted.
"It's too early to expect much from us at this stage," he said. "We are virtually a new team. It's going to take at least half a season before we start to hit our straps."
The Roosters also were below strength. They left former state rep Mike Megins behind. Megins, 30, is worth a lot of points to the team.
However Horsell's confidence about North being in the play-offs must have slumped since then with Paul Franke's decision to return to Coburg.
At 205cm (6ft 8in) Franke was North's tallest player and most prolific scorer. His best game for North was possibly his tournament-high 30 points against Melbourne Tigers in the Coburg tournament.
Heidelberg-Bulleen, thanks to a great display by guard Alan Black, pipped St Kilda 76-73 in the final.
North's scorers were Paul Franke 56, Bob Hannam 35, Melvyn Need 26, Mike Miers 12, Jim Paul 10, Mal Pearn 9, Alan Smith 6, Greg Newley 6, Grant McLean 5, Scott Howarth 3.
North Adelaide is the club which produced Olympian Alan Hare who is now a member of the SA District Basketball Association's management committee.
Hare is the club's most famous player, although it is said his brother Barry would have been better had he had Alan's keenness.
The Harris brothers, "Dinks" and "Skippy" were other fine players and Basil Sellars was another of the club's greats.
Present captain Jim Paul and Mike Megins have over 300 games to their credit and should join South Adelaide Panthers Scott Davie and Dean Whitford in the 500-games club.

Coach received $750 fee plus $30 per winning game.
Club successfully recruited a player from New Zealand (Gordon Reardon). However he returned to NZ (minutes 6/9) without reference to the Executive Committee. The Club looked at (no indication if they did) setting up a flat for the player and his wife.
Two players from the Philipines were scouted (minutes indicate J Brand was to be despatched to scout “tall players”) and employment secured. The issue of their visas became a sticking point for several months.
Paul Arnold (who went on to become a successful SANFL player with North Adelaide), is mentioned as someone the club should approach as he is moving to Adelaide (from Port Pirie).
At one stage there was some discussion around the club “buying” a game (featuring an American team) from the “State” (assume this means the association).
The “Men’s Incentive Club” loaned the Management Committee $500 !
The Men’s Metro A Team forfeited 3 games and spirit was said to have deteriorated. Noted that “it would take hard work, support and some time to lift morale”.
Canadian player Brett Farch has been recruited to play for NABC (already in Adelaide).

Interesting Items
Club was very active socially with several events organised for members and the public. Some examples are –
Ernie Sigley Evening
Ernie Sigley had been a TV personality for some time and was enticed to come to SA for an evening. The Club arranged the event, and despite assurances was not underwritten for any losses. Attendance was poor at 1,100 (even though the most expensive tickets were $4.50), and loss on the evening was $4287.90.
All Stars Challenge Night
Club organised a game between Telstars (Victoria) v North (Women), followed by the SA All Stars v the Victorian All Stars (Men) at Apollo. Initially the game was to be televised but this was later cancelled and it was broadcast on the radio instead. A loss of $265.37 was made.
Rodney Fox Night
No indication of exactly what this was (assume a talk by Shark expert Rodney Fox), but 200 tickets were sold. Notes indicate “not well supported” and a profit of $6 was logged.
Cabarets
Several cabarets organised through the year. One of note asked for 1,000 tickets to be printed !!
Road Trips
There were lots of “tours” to different places, and visits by other teams. Indicators are that –
Mens District, Under 20 Girls and “one other team” go to Broken Hill for a tournament there.
Junior girls teams (some 51 girls and 8 parents) went to Hobart.
Women’s District team went to Warnambool (and finished 4th).
District Women went to Ballarat.
Women’s team were also planning a USA trip, so were unlikely to attend the Australian Club Championships.
Under 18 boys qualified for National Championships held in Sydney.
Under 20 Boys, Under 16 Boys and Under 18 Girls went to Coburg.
An invitation was received for NABC to send a Men’s team (party of 15 all up) to the Phillipines at no cost to North Adelaide. This was eventually declined as the Phillipines was a professional league and NABC is amateur.
Coburg visited NABC.
Stirling (WA) visited NABC bringing 10 boys and 3 officials.
Other Items
The Club was surprised by a telephone bill they received from the PMG, at some $403 !! They asked that STD facilities be removed from the line.
Trainings cost 20 cents, and this was done on an honesty system.
Fees for the Winter Season 1976 were set at –
Under 16 – $5.00
Under 18 - $7.50
Under 20 - $10.00
Over 20 (male) - $15.00
Over 20 (female) - $12.00.
