District Men Premiers (defeated West Torrens 44-41)
Coverage of the Day
North Adelaide added another title to its long list by downing West Torrens in a bitter, see-sawing district basketball final at Forestville last night.
Torrens led 12-6 at the end of the first quarter, Gary Coombs making good use in the pivot of smart passes by his team mates.
Boyd Randall put North back into the picture again with a corner shot, then two from close quarters and at half time North had forged ahead 18-14.
Torrens came back after the interval with a brilliant patch of 12 points from 7 shots. Bryan Hennig and Don Atkinson screening and set-shooting crisply.
North had trouble penetrating the Torrens defence but two bad fumbles by Torrens saw North tie the score at 28 all at the end of the third quarter.
A timely substitution gave North the edge as Elder Homer scored eight quick points.
Hennig fouled out with five minutes to play but Torrens stuck to its zone defence making it easier for North to hold its lead.
Scorers Cotton 12; Hare 8; Homer 8; Spargo 6, Randall 6; Harris 4).

Newspaper Coverage of District Grand Final 1965
South Adelaide made history when it beat North Adelaide by 13 points to take the 1965 District Winter basketball premiership at Forestville last night.
About 1200 people saw South become the first team to complete a district season – 22 matches – undefeated.
It was also South’s second successive winter title.
North scored through Dick Trott in the first 25 seconds. About 65 seconds later captain Scott Davie opened South’s account. Davie, playing brilliantly scored with eight of his nine early shots.
This, coupled with AhMatt’s good teamwork, enabled South to lead 35 to 20 at half time.
The tough South defence caused North to miss many shots in the first half, but in the early stages of the second half North came back.
It got to within 10 points with six minutes remaining. However South regained touch from Bob Hannam’s accurate shooting.
Sir Roland Jacobs presented the West End trophy, the first top be given, to Davie.

North Adelaide Stadium
9th March - J Horsell to write requesting quotation & plan from G Farquhar re North Adelaide Stadium.
Plans submitted to General Committee. Verbal quotation of $35,000 submitted. Prospectus to Council 8th April - Members by Mr Sellers and Mr Horsell.
8th June – Meeting with Sub Committee from Enfield Council and Association to be arranged to discuss finance of proposed stadium.
5th October – Carnival to be arranged for opening of North Adelaide Stadium – Men and Women.
9th November – Building Report still in hands of Minister and possibly a further wait of 6 weeks.
30th November - Secretary’s Report advises – “The Building Committee has been very active in 1969 and it now appears reasonably certain that we could have a two court stadium erected in 1970. Approval has been given by the Enfield Council and through them, an application has been placed with the State Government for a loan to erect the stadium in conjunction with the D & MABA. This is a very ambitious step and one which will require assistance from all members, but it is a move that will continue to keep North Adelaide the leading Basketball Club in South Australia.”
