A serious leg injury to Checker’s Bede Marsters resulted in the Men’s Premier Hoben trophy game being called off early in the second half with the defending Hoben trophy Atami leading the defending championship winner Checkers 45-29 in Cowles stadium on Saturday. Gators ran and ran against University before prevailing in a tight game 81-63 while Wolverines relaxed its grip on its encounter against Lincoln University, closing out a strong comeback from the students before winning 88-72.

Bede’s Mum, Sharon Rusbatch, has sent me this report on his progress after his operation on Monday with many well wishes sending their hopes for a speedy recovery.

Rusbatch/Marsters family would like to thank everyone involved in ensuring Bede got to hospital where he underwent surgery Monday 13th May to repair two very clean breaks in his lower right leg.  He will be heading home in the next two days to begin recovery.  The messages of love and support have been overwhelming and appreciated.  Look out next season as Bede will be back and rearing to go again. We do have a classy pair of CUT away Checkers shorts if anyone is interested J

Enjoy the rest of your season

Men’s Premier Hoben Trophy

Atami leading Checkers 45-29 when game stopped

The unbeaten Atami appear comfortable at the top of the table while four teams are still in contention for the other Hoben Trophy final spot on May 25th, so CBA officials will have to decide if the game will be replayed or not and will contact the teams. Checkers will clash with Wolverines in this Saturday’s final round and could be a key game to see who makes the final.

Marsters season may well be over with a nasty fracture of his leg as he rose to shoot a basket and with his brother, Ethan Rusbatch, away on NBL duties with Taranaki, Checkers maybe struggling this season. Marsters had scored 16 points before the game was stopped, shooting 6 from 9 from the floor, penetrating inside the tall Atami defence and making much of the play around the perimeter while Nat Connell directed operations for Checkers. Atami’s Alex Dobbs slotted several three’s and captain Ritchie Howell also scored a rear basket from behind the arc. Checkers defence was rock solid forcing Atami to take more outside shots with Cam Chalmers landing two more triples while Sam Dobbs used his strength to break the Checkers defence and drive to the hoop for his 10 points.

Wolverines prove too strong for Lincoln winning 88-72

In a heavy defensive game, Wolverines established control in the first quarter, leading 20-13 through the efforts of Oli Davies and Dean Le Warne with Nino Nabong landing a three pointer. Lincoln stepped up in the second quarter through the efforts of Nick Erwood, Manuel Nunez and Pat Fraser to close the gap with a 20-18 quarter. Lionel Hopgood gathered in the rebound ball to keep Wolverines ahead 38-33 at the break.

James Cawthorn added a string of baskets for the students in the early stages of the third quarter to mount a fightback but stronger team work saw Wolverines pull ahead by another 10 points. Wolverines tightened its grip on the game with Mike Kinley running non-stop for his 18 points and eight rebounds while Hopgood educated the Lincoln “Bigs” with  29 points and 17 rebounds. Oli Davies added 20 points, six steals and 10 rebounds. Pat Fraser slotted 15 and grabbed 11 rebounds to aid Lincoln’s cause.

Gators outrun University 81-63

Matt Stevenson with a determined 24 points inspired Gators to run the ball at University at every opportunity. Chris Duthie and Alex Jellie added to Gators penetration but the University kept them from the board while Jozef Knottenbelt slotted three triples to give the hard working Gators breathing space. Gators stretched its lead to 40-27 but University rallied in the third quarter through the efforts of Willy McVitty and Harley Campbell. Brent Fisher was well contained but opened out in the final quarter to finish with 18 points for University while Gators pulled away, again Stevenson slotting numerous finger-rolling baskets after ducking and diving the students defences for Gators to win by 18 points.

Women’s Premier Patron’s trophy

Halswell beat a lack-lustre defending champion University 52-39 in the Women’s Premier Patron’s trophy encounter.  Lincoln University had a strong 72-36 win over Gators while Minties started to relax too early and had to re-gain its rhythm before beating a game Pioneer team 74-54.

Halswell (8 pts) is now unbeaten while University (7), Minties (6) and Lincoln Uni (6) are locked in the battle to find the other team to contest the Patron’s trophy final on May 25th with one round of games this Saturday still to be played.

Halswell wins the top battle over University 52-39

The top-of-the-table clash between the two unbeaten teams in Women’s Premier saw Halswell open up an early lead against long term champion University, leading 20-6 by quarter-time with both sides missing key players. Key University player Pip Connell was injured playing for the Wildcats as was Halswell’s Lori McDaniel so neither could play.

Halswell’ s was boosted by the Wildcats Italian player, Cecillia Zambrini who worked in well with playmaking guard Emily Baker at both ends of the court while and Anna Williams displayed experience. Zambrini slotted 11 points and grabbed eight steels with the Baker sisters Emily and Jessica slotting nine points each.

Jamie Campbell hauled in 13 big rebounds for the students while Laken Wairau contributed nine points in a low scoring encounter.

The second quarter was evenly matched, Halswell still ahead 28-14 and little separated the two sides in the second spell with Halswell mainting a 13winning point lead as its team work gelled.

Lincoln University 72 Gators 36

Canterbury Wildcat Hannah Turton gave Lincoln a solid start while Marnie Block and Anastasia Tauamiti grafted away for Gators, the game tied 14-14 at the first break. Bailey McDougall, Wildcat Shea Crotty and Tessa Klein added to Lincoln’s effort and pulled away to lead 32-23 at the half-time break. Lincoln tightened its defence to shut the door on Gators leading the period 22-4 and continued to pull away to win by 36 points.

Minties 74 Pioneer 54

Kaiapoi’s Gemma Hazeldine popped up everywhere as she ran in another solid performance scoring 26 points while Sia Ah Tong and Hayley Gray pressured the Pioneer ball carriers. Minties meet little resistance in the first quarter running out to a 21-4 lead but the Connie Dick inspired Pioneeer responded and started to find gaps in the Minties defence with support from the hard-working Rachel Kersten. By half-time Minties had pulled further ahead with Ah Tong getting easily inside. Minties relaxed the pressure in the third quarter with Kersten, Dick and a busy Abby Rutledge reducing the margin to trail 54-43. Hazeldine picked up the Minties speed in the final quarter to pull clear for a comfortable win, the 30 point Margin flattering Minties a little.

Scorers were:

Halswell 52 (Cecillia Zambrini 11, 8S, Jess Baker 9, Emily Baker 9) University 39 (Laken Wairau 9). HT: 28-14. Paul Havill led a strong attack from Wolverines against Checkers and with support from  the master-blaster Jamie Graham pulled clear for a comfortable 78-48 win and remain the only unbeaten team in the grade.

Old Boys, led by Martin Maunsell and Jamie Day proved too strong for Pioneer Blue with a solid 67-46 victory to slip into second place, a point behind Wolverines.

The defending Champion Placemakers Wolves Blue piled on the points and the pressure to chalk up a decisive 83-46 win over Pioneer Yellow through the solid efforts of the Costley trio, Gareth with 28, Cameron with 23 and led by its captain Fraser Costley.

On Sunday the North Canterbury couldn’t make it four from four when they succumbed to Atami 64-56 despite valiant efforts from Simon Falloon and Corey Crampton. CBA Board member Jeremy Phillips led by example, slotting 14 points for Atami.

In the Men’s Division 1/Under 23 Challengs, MD1 University was able to use fantastic defense to hold the Pacers to only 31 points over the whole game. Men’s Under 23 Championship

Gators and Wolverines both have four from four and have established a gap on the next three teams, Checkers, Atami and Lincoln University with two wins apiece in the race to find the ‘Top four’ for round two.

Canterbury U23 – Round 4 Reports by Dan Chan

Atami v Checkers (66 – 60)

The Miami Heat and the New York Knicks have shown that playing ‘small ball’ is all the rage in the NBA at the moment and Atami’s three guard combo proved that they are no different, as ex-Shirley Boys’ High members - Alex Dobbs (22), Bryn McLennan (21) and Cam Chalmers (11) - provided over 80% of Atami’s 66 points. However, they had to fend off a late surge from defending champions Checkers with guard Jacob Naylor (13) and forward Brook Fendall (10) ensuring that the game would be tight until the end.

Wolverines v Lincoln University (66 – 54)

The unbeaten Wolverines team hung on to beat a determined Lincoln University after opening up a 22-4 lead in the first quarter. The fightback from Lincoln was led by the ever-consistent Nick Erwood, who hoisted his patented ‘bank floaters’ on his way to yet another double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds), ex-Scot’s College forward Pat Fraser (10 points, 12 rebounds) and lightning quick point guard Aled Jones (10 points, 6 rebounds). Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to overcome their poor start, with Wolverines captain Oli Davies (12), shooting big man Andrew Kellaway (12) and young guard Taylor Britt (11), leading the young ‘wolfpack’ to another victory.

Gators v Royals (102 – 44)

Gators, once again, proved that they are the team to beat with a 58-point drubbing of Royals. The Gators team, in a San Antonio Spurs-like manner, decided to rest key players Chris DuthieAlex Jellie and Kaye McKee for this round which opened the door for Jordan Duggan (27), Zach Lilburne (22) and Jozef Knottenbelt (19) to showcase their talent. Royals provided little resistance with swingman Simon Hodgson (11) the only player to reach double figures.

Varsity v North Canterbury (76 – 68)

Varsity notched up its first win of the season with a W against North Canterbury, 76 – 68. The Varsity boys looked in control at halftime with a 10 point buffer; their pick and roll game really troubling the NC defence. However, the NC boys never gave up, responding back by winning the third quarter 24-15, and setting up the fourth for an exciting finish. The young Varsity team met the challenge with some key baskets down the stretch - captain Rowan Feeney going 7/9 FG for 19 points, and centre Ollie Crawford (13), forward Finbar Argus (10) and guard Karl Magon (10) all notching double figures.  For NC, swingman Scott Edwards worked hard for his 23 points, shooter Liam Connelly briefly heated up for 12 points (3/3 3PT) and forward Daine Parata added another 12.

In the final quarter the country boys close the gap to 3-5 points repeatedly but could not put the students away.

After a heavy round of scoring in the third quarter Logan Woodill made great use of his extra time of the bench to slot 22 points, mostly in the last quarter to keep the momentum rolling.

Karesse Lavery had to work very hard to earn his nine points for Pioneer.

Middleton Grange Gators 88 Lincoln High 54

Zach Lilburne led an early charge from Middleton with some handy baskets but was matched in intensity by good teamwork from Lincoln High with Ben Bollie stepping up with three successive baskets as Lincoln held Middleton to 17-17 at the first break. Canterbury and NZ under-age representative Ihaka Pink led a strong Middleton charge in the second quarter as his team outscored Lincoln 28-9 to race to a 45-25 half-time lead while the elusive James Cawthorn had to work extra hard for Lincoln to slip through the ever-tightening Middleton defence. Coach Tim Bennetts has had the Gators trying numerous moves and already has the side tuned to become a top contender to challenge Burnside’s top-dog status. Ashleigh Adamson responded with some strong defence and penetrated the Lincoln defence to earn his 10 points.

An unmarked Cawthorn regular turns in over 30PPG but he was well restricted but tight marking, managing only 19 points while his trusty sidekick Stu Erskine was restricted to 12 points.

Cashmere beats STAC 65-36

The usually organized Zak De Roo hard to work hard to marshall the Stac effort which was quickly contained by roaming Cashmere defence. Wolverines kept up the pressure in a hectic final quarter as the game swung on the balance but the high foul count took its toll on Boys High and Wolverines escaped to a narrow victory.

North Canterbury overwhelmed Gators 78-46

Mid-week Men

The defending champion University was made to work very hard for its win over new entrant Burnham on Wednesday night with Burnham squandering its chances in the closing stages with turnovers and missed shots. Burnham lead 28-26 at the break with University closing out a narrow 50-46 win.Regular grade MVP winner David Baird showed he was still the man to stop with an athletic 21 points for University while the remaining former students had to work hard to keep the busy soldiers at bay. Vince Van Dorn used his height to dominate the boards, slotting 14 points for Burnham while Ben Shaw and Brad Fraser worked hard for little reward.

Competition in the top section of the competition is already strong with Bandits having to come from behind  to beat three-times former champion Raiders 46-43.

Another three times former champion Checkers White were given a strong run around by Lincoln University, leading 39-27 and re-buffed a strong challenge from the students before edging clear 62-57. Former Canterbury Ram Paul Isitt muzzled in for a hard earned 16 points while Nigel Buchanan drove strongly for his 14 points for Checkers while Fabian Kulpe led the Lincoln challenge with 19 and support from Cam Sheera and Mattty Resi.

Checkers White and University lead the grade unbeaten after three rounds. The grade will divide into Top six, Bottom six after round one robin (11 weeks) followed by Semi-Finals and Finals for all teams.

Mid- week Women

New entrant Hi-Rollers, organised by Olly Nicholas had to work hard after a slow start in its first match against another new entry Pioneer. Pioneer opened a healthy early lead before Hi-Rollers could find the basket and held an 18-14 lead at the turn around. Hi-Rollers crawled back slowly as new found team combinations started to work but missed several chances to put the game away in the closing stages and the game went to extra-time, locked at 30-30. Aria Cate slotted a solitary free throw late in the extra two minute period to give Hi-Rollers victory 31-30 just as it appeared to be going into sudden death Golden point period of play. Cate slotted 15 points to lead all scorers.

The defending champion Halswell Red had to work hard to repulse a strong challenge from sister side Halswell Green before winning 45-30 while CYA proved too strong for Checkers, winning 51-32. University edged out Royals 32-26 in the other match.

Halswell Red and CYA are the only unbeaten  teams after three rounds.
