The National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI) successfully staged the Olympic Day in Honiara. Held on Saturday 23 June, being the Olympic Day, NOCSI through the Athletes Commission and the Women in Sports Commission marked the day with games including relays, awareness and quizzes.
NOCSI President Martin Rara in his opening remarks, emphasized the important role that sports played in our society and how important it is to learn and try out new sports at an early age.
The event which took place at the Rove Police Grounds from 9am to 2pm saw around 120 young boys and girls, men and women come out to be part of the event.
With the aim to raise awareness on the importance of physical activity and sports in our society, the event provided the opportunity for the young boys and girls to learn about and try out different sports namely Taekwando, Athletics, Tennis, Table Tennis and Soccer.
The event was also marked with a mixed relay for the oldies who showed they still had it in them.
The day ended with a quiz with winners taking home soccer balls donated by the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) and presentation of certificates.
The participants who turned up especially the young boys and girls really enjoyed the day as they learnt new skills through the sports while others were just happy to come and watch the event.
NOCSI President was very happy with the turnout to this inaugural event and aims to make this an annual event in NOCSI’s calendar of events.
NOCSI President also thanked the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) for availing the Rove Grounds, Taekwando Federation, Athletics Federation, Solomon Islands Tennis Association, Solomon Islands Table Tennis Association, SIFF, and all the volunteers from these sports who came out to assist the Athletes Commission and Women in Sports Commission make the day a successful one.
