In recent developments, the Palau National Olympic Committee was able to secure a scholarship from the Oceania Foundation through its partnership with Samsung for Palau’s elite wrestler, Elgin “Tulop” Elwais in the amount of USD$6,400.00.
Elgin, better known as Tulop, started his wrestling career eight years ago, when he began learning the fundamentals of the sport. It quickly became apparent that Tulop had a natural gift as he progressed with such precision that he was selected to be a member of the national wrestling team to represent Palau at the 5th Micronesian Games in Pohnpei in 2002. Although Tulop had much more to learn in terms of technique he was able to secure his first medal (bronze) in the 55kg Freestyle category. This was the beginning of a long and arduous journey for Tulop as he continued his wrestling training and competed at both national games and regional games, which ultimately led him to secure a most prestigious slot to compete in the recently held 29th Olympic Games in Beijing of 2008.
Tulop is currently ranked number three in all of Oceania and Palau National Olympic Committee’s prized elite athlete. Through the generous support of President Johnson Toribiong, Tulop was able to secure airfare to California to attend Lassen College not only to continue his wrestling program and trainings, but also to secure an education. And through the athlete scholarship from Oceania Foundation and Samsung, Tulop will be able to continue that education and with the hospitality and guidance of Mr. Motare Ngiratmab and Lassen College Assistant Wrestling Coach, Fran Beaujon, Tulop will be able to heighten his wrestling technique through training and competition. Palau National Olympic Committee will continue to put all effort and support to assist Tulop in reaching his full potential in anticipation of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
