After 2 months of training in Texas at numerous clubs, both wrestlers from Palau, Skilang Temengil and Blesam Tarkong, arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 03, 2015 to train at the Brazilian Training Center. Both wrestlers trained twice a day at 10:00am where they did live wrestling and takedowns. In the afternoon, practice resumed at 4:00pm to include circuit training, drills and matches. Both wrestlers were able to train with some of the top wrestlers from Brazil. There were a few other teams training in Brazil to include teams from Armenia and Kazakstan. On August 14th, Temengil returned to the Texas while Blesam went on to travel and compete in Salvador, Brazil at the 2015 Junior World Championships. Temengil will be attending the USA Acclimation Camp later this month while Blesam will return to Neoshu County Community College to continue school and wrestling with the team.
The Junior World Championships was held in Salvador, Brazil from August 11-16, 2015. Jarvis competed in the Mens FS 66kg weight division. Blesam wrestled his first match against Carlos Romero Millaqueo of Chilli. Blesam shot in for a double leg takedown and as Milaqueo defended, Milaqueo scored the first 2 points on a roll but Blesam stood his ground and held Milaqueo to his back and scored 2 points. Blesam was able to hold Milaqueo on his back for about 10 seconds or so till the referee called it a pin for the win. Blesam won the match in the qualification rounds under 1 minute and 11 seconds. Blesam was able to advance and wrestle Antony Montero of Venezuela but lost 10-0 technical superiority. Out of 26 wrestlers Blesam ranked 9th in the Junior WC. Overall, Aaron Pico of USA won the gold medal, second place was Sidakov Zaurbek of Russia placed 2nd. Bronze went o Jamal Ebadi of Iran and Michael Bucher of Switzerland.
Also competing in the Junior World Championships was Ilonia Alison of the Marshall Islands. Ilonia competed in the FW 67kgj. Ilonia wrestled Elis Manalova of Azerbaijan and wrestled well during her match, but Azerbaijan was able to score and win the match by technical points 10-0. Ilonia ranked 14 out of 16 wrestlers. Masako Furuichi of Japan won the gold medal over Moa Nygren of Sweden taking silver medal. Alla Belinska of Ukraine and Elis Manalova both won the bronze medal matches.
Both Blesam and Skilang will continue their training in the USA while Christian Etpison Nicolescu is currently training in Korea. All 3 of Palau’s top wrestlers are expected to compete in the 2015 Senior World Championships being held in Las Vegas, USA from September 7-12, 2015. All 3 wrestlers won gold medals in the 2014 Micronesian Games and the 2015 Oceania Championships earlier this year.
