Team Palau Update last week of Pacific Games

Today in Noumea its raining and chilly with a temperature of 66 degrees and a bit of cold wind. However, the team is in high spirit with Palau Athletics Team starting their events today at the Stade Stadium with 100m sprints heats and finals for both men and women, and field events finals. Weightlifting is also today at 3pm with weight-ins for the athletes and competition today with finals in the evenings. Table Tennis continues its events with Singles pool matches and finals. Tomorrow Tuesday, 10^th September at 1pm the Palau Baseball Team will play against Guam. These is the play off for the baseball event. If Palau win, the team goes straight to the gold medal game. There are six teams (CNMI, Guam, Fiji, New Caledonia, American Samoa and Palau) in the baseball event in this Pacific Games in Noumea. The Palau swim team took a domestic flight to Ouvea over the weekend to compete in the 5km swim event where are swimmers clocked an hour twenty and an hour twenty one respectfully in the open water event. These was the last event for the swimmers. The Va’a team completed their events over the weekend at Poindime, the North Province of Noumea where they held the long distance race for V1 Canoe and V6 Canoe. The V1 Men time in the 15k was an 1 hour and 30minutes and the V1 woman time was 1 hour 34minutes in the women’s 10k race. Our women’s team canoe clocked 2hrs and 33 minutes in the 20k race. The Canoe athletes returned from a 6hour drive from Poindime back to the Games main village in Noumea.

In other related Games news, the Pacific Games Council held its general Annual Assembly yesterday, where the bid countries for 2017 Mini Pacific Games made their final presentations. Three countries (CNMI, Nauru and Vanuatu) presented their final presentations to the Pacific Games Council Members and the bid award to the 2017 Mini Pacific Games was voted and awarded to Vanuatu. The next Pacific Mini Games is in Wallis & Fatuna, followed by the main Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea in 2015 and the next mini Pacific Games in Vanuatu in 2017. The next big Games will be in 2019, where Tahiti, Solomon Islands and Tonga all have expressed interests to bid for this Games.

The Team Palau athletes, coaches, managers and team management will all return home on Sunday night 11^th of September. The closing ceremony of the games is 10^th of September.
