What's my coaching philosophy?
Writing this article has made me reflect on the way I coach my players.
In the past, I have made mistakes. Sometimes I bowed to the pressure to win matches, there were times when I left players on the bench for too long and sometimes I made my players train too hard and too often.
Sure, the team went two seasons without losing a game and they won every competition we entered – but at what cost?
Looking back, I can see how stressful that "successful" period was for me and I don't remember seeing many smiles from my players.
That's all changed now. I have a rule that every player who comes to a match gets to play for at least half the game, regardless of the situation. And we have a lot more fun at training!
We don't win every game any more but we do win more than we lose.
And we're all a lot more relaxed...
I suppose I could sum it up by saying that I want every player to arrive at training and matches with a smile on their face and leave the same way.
That's my coaching philosophy.
