ROUND SEVENTEEN: Mount Gambier Pioneers v Woodville Warriors

WOMEN by Kieren Vartuli

Round 17 sees the Pioneers host the Warriors at the Ice House, an always challenging atmosphere. Woodville are aiming to close the gap between them and Norwood to only a few points and percentage with a win over Mount Gambier. The only problem stopping this situation is the strong Mount Gambier Pioneers on the road. Only one week out of a back-to-back weekend, the Pioneers are 4th but tying 3rd with Eastern on 35-points and are only behind by 7 per cent. Nonetheless, the results in the coming weeks can still sway the top 4-positions.

A disappointing 4-22 final term gave the visiting Tigers their first win of their own back-to-back weekend. After being destroyed at home by 22-points, the Warriors will direct their attention to the contending Pioneers. In an all-round disappointing game for Woodville, their bright spark was Teige Morrell who recorded a double-double with 17-points and 13-rebounds.

Moving forward, Woodville defensively need to slow the Pioneers offensive targets in Frost and Roberts who put up astounding numbers in their back-to-back fixtures. Combining for 92-points over both games, the unbelievable scoring prowess of these players is a key to any chance of victory.

Overcoming the Pioneers has been a difficult task for many this season and the Warriors will most likely be added to their list of opponents they’ve made a statement against.

Hang Time Prediction: Mt Gambier Pioneers

MEN by Daniel Renfrey

The Pioneers again took no prisoners in their Round 17 performances, dismantling the Bearcats on Saturday and the Panthers on Sunday. Their ball movement and security resulting in high assist numbers and low turnovers was again a trend for the team and was too difficult to stop. Barkley and the Daly brothers were also in dominant form. If the team can bring the same intensity on offence and defence as they have been all season, and if Barkley and the Daly brothers perform well, they won’t lose this one. The Warriors will be hungry after their loss to the Tigers, but whether they will be good enough or not remains to be seen. Their defence will need to be at its best and Boonstoppel and Stanbridge, who combined for 51 points, will need more support. Mt Gambier performing consistently is perhaps more realistic and they should grab a straightforward win.
