Cook Islands Triathlete Thomas Henderson has qualified for the 2006 Commonwealth Games in March.
At just 19, Henderson will be heading off to his first games following a successful year in 2005. In that year he competed in the Mini South Pacific Games for the first time in Palau and picked up a bronze medal.
On 14 January, Henderson competed in a triathlon race in Auckland, New Zealand. This was the closest race they could find that would simulate the Melbourne course.
Henderson had to complete the race with a time the same or better than 2:12. He did just that completing the race with a time of 2:01:54.
Father as well as coach and manager Kevin Henderson is extremely proud of his son's achievement and says it is good to see his training and determination has paid off.
Henderson will return from New Zealand at the end of this month and will continue with his training before the Commonwealth Games.
He will be taking part in the Saturday races here on Rarotonga as a means of continuing to sharpen his skills. - Tara Carr
