AFL Victoria has announced three squads for the Youth Girls Academy for 2013, as well as additions to the Futures Squad.
With a fifteen percent increase in Youth Girls participation in 2012, AFL Victoria will establish a third Youth Girls Academy to accommodate such growth. The Sandringham Dragons will be home to the latest Academy, providing Youth Girls from Melbourne’s East with more accessible to high performance opportunities. AFL Victoria established a second Academy at the beginning of 2012 at the North Ballarat Rebels, whilst the original metropolitan Academy was moved to the Calder Cannons at the same time.
Thanks to funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria, AFL Victoria will continue to expand the Youth Girls Academy program into six regions by 2015, providing Youth Girls footballers with more local opportunities to access high performance programs. AFL Victoria will engage these Academies to participate in an under 18 Youth Girls State League by 2016.
Participants in the 2013 Youth Girls Academies will begin the program in November this year.
In addition to the Youth Girls Academies, AFL Victoria has expanded the size of its new Futures Squad. The Futures Squad aims to provide additional development opportunities for younger or less experienced Youth Girls players. Held once every school holidays, the girls undertake a full day’s training with TAC Cup Development Coach, Alicia Eva, that focuses on the girls individual needs.
The next Futures Squad session will be held on September 25 at Calder Cannons FC, Highgate Reserve, Craigieburn from 10am-2pm. All new girls are required to attend as well as existing Futures Squad members.
