AFL Victoria is pleased to announce the 2012 Victorian and AFL Victoria Development Youth Girls teams. The fifty-four girls selected across both teams will compete at the 2012 AFL National U18s Youth Girls Championships in Adelaide from May 14-19.
A squad of eighty has been training weekly at the Calder Cannons TAC Cup Club in preparation for the Championships since the end of February, with some girls travelling over three hours to get to training.
Represented in the Victorian team are Victorian Premier’s Award recipient, Ellie Blackburn and Rhiannon Banner, sister of Port Adelaide Football Club’s Mitchell Banner. The youngest member of the team is Newtown & Chilwell Football Club’s Lily Mithen, who turned fourteen last month. She will make her National Championships debut alongside other debutants in Bonnie Griffiths and Brittany Bonnici who started their football careers at Stawell JFC and Wallan JFC respectively.
AFL Victoria’s Development team will enjoy a Tasmanian flavour this year. Tasmanian Women’s Football League players, Maddie Smith and Kiara Foley have been selected as part of an AFL initiative to ensure that Australia’s best talent has the opportunity to play representative football, regardless of their own State’s development of Youth Girls football. Former Tasmanian women’s team representative, Emma Oliver, has been selected after moving to Victoria this year. Maddie Smith is a current senior All-Australian representative, after an outstanding performance at last year’s AFL National Women’s Championships. AFL Victoria’s Development team is mostly comprised of debutants, as we seek to invest in our newer and younger players, whilst there are more country representatives than ever before. The team includes strong football pedigrees in Lucy Schneider, younger sister of Hawthorn Football Club rookie, Tom; and, Georgia Watson, sister of VFL North Ballarat FC player, Thomas.
AFL Victoria congratulates all girls on their commitment and tireless work over the selection journey and looks forward to seeing the two teams' development over the Championships.
