Youth Girls football is due for its biggest country expansion yet, with two new competitions to start in 2012. The Ovens & Murray Football League in Albury-Wodonga and the Gippsland League have committed to running their own competitions, providing local girls with opportunities never before enjoyed in these areas.
To assist in the start up of these competitions, AFL Victoria in conjunction with the local leagues, will be running free super clinics for any girls in the region. The first of these will be held at 10am on Sunday February 3 at the Wodonga Senior Secondary College as part of AFL Victoria’s Youth Girls Academy Community Camp. Another free super clinic will be held soon after in the La Trobe Valley to generate interest in the Gippsland League’s competition. All girls attending the super clinics will receive their own footballs as a thank you for their participation.
Youth Girls competitions cater for girls aged 13-18 and emphasise fun, fitness and friendship in a family friendly environment and managed by local community football leagues. In 2012, eleven competitions will be held across metropolitan Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Warrnambool, Shepparton, Albury/Wodonga and Gippsland.
AFL Victoria has prioritised the development of Youth Girls competitions in country Victoria, as part of a philosophy in female football to provide more local and regional opportunities for more girls. AFL Victoria expects every major regional centre to have its own all Youth Girls competition by 2015.
Victoria has Australia’s most comprehensive female participation and talent pathway, providing more opportunities for girls to participate in Australian football than in any other State.
