Barwon Heads Youth Girls team defeated last year’s Premiers, Clonard College, in the first Geelong Youth Girls semi final on Sunday. With only one win separating the teams on the ladder, the game was always going to be a close affair from the opening bounce. Scores were level at half time, and very little changed from there as both teams fought to gain an advantage. Barwon Heads, who finished the second half of the season in strong form, were able to take the ball deeper on more occasions, giving them crucial scoring opportunities. At the final siren, Barwon Heads claimed their first Grand Final berth in only their second season, with an eleven point victory over Clonard College.
In the second semi final, minor premiers, Leopold defeated fourth placed Sacred Heart to book a spot in their third consecutive grand final. Both teams enjoyed a similar number of forward 50 entries, but the class by foot of dual grand finalists, Leopold, was the difference. Leopold, who lost last year’s grand final to Clonard College, will now take on Barwon Heads in the Geelong Youth Girls grand final on Sunday August 14 at Belmont’s Winter Reserve at 10:30am.
