This week’s Division One VWFL Preliminary Final between Pascoe Vale and Darebin looks to be another classic, after the sides gifted fans with some heart-stopping football the last two times they met. James Szabo reports.
Pascoe Vale ended up victors in both games earlier in the season, although by just one point in Round 2 and then three points in Round 11.
The Panthers finished the season in second place on the ladder, before going down to Kew in last week’s Semi Final by 40 points.
While the loss signalled a three-game losing streak for Pascoe Vale, they still had something to smile about with impressive performances from some of their stars.
Sarah Theuma, Olivia Storer, Rachel Gastin, Rita Locco, Siobhan Carlton and Stephanie Normington – Dickens were the best for the Panthers and will look to help their side earn a chance for the flag with another strong performance. Theuma was the standout in the losing side, booting three goals.
Darebin earnt their spot in the Preliminary Final after finishing the season in third place and overcoming Whitehorse in a tight Elimination Final by four points.
The Falcons were down by 2 points at half time, before getting into gear and producing some classy football in the third and fourth quarters.
Lauren Suleiman, Cherelle Byrne, Julia Chiera, Rechelle Mcswain, Shannon Egan and Emma Oliver lead Darebin to the inspirational win. Suleiman, Egan, Chiera and Erika Vredenbregt were the goal kickers.
The game is set to be a tight, hard-fought contest, with both sides possessing top class talent throughout their squads. The previous two clashes between Pascoe Vale and Darebin have been nail-biters, and the VWFL fans are expecting the same this time around.
The winner of the game will face Kew in the Grand Final the following week.
The Preliminary Final starts from 11.00am this Sunday, September 11 at Highgate Recreation Reserve.
