Lake Wendouree and East Point will fight for a spot in the Grand Final of the Goldfields division of the Victorian Women’s Football League this weekend when they face off in the Preliminary Final at White Flat. Kate Withers reports.
The winner will meet MCDFNL in the inaugural Goldfields Grand Final on August 21, after the Bears earned their spot with an eight-goal victory over Lake Wendouree last week in the Semi Final.
The Lakers managed just two goals in the 48-point loss, but head in to Sunday’s clash against East Point hopeful of earning a Grand Final berth.
Prolific scorer Tylah Bruhn was held goalless for just the second time this season, with Jacquelyn James doing all the heavy lifting for Lake Wendouree with both majors.
Bruhn will look to return to form this weekend against East Point, and will likely be assisted by the dependable best on ground group of Winona Greenhalgh, Lauren Murphy, Jordan Ivey and Jordyn Gilmer.
East Point secured its spot in the 2016 Preliminary Final with a 7-point with over Bacchus Marsh in last week’s do or die Semi Final.
Superstar sisters Kelly and Simone McNeight were instrumental again for the Dragons alongside Emily Boswell who claimed best on ground honours.
The Dragons will need to capitalise on the scoreboard this weekend against Lake Wendouree after posting just five goals from 12 scoring shots in their win against Bacchus Marsh.
East Point will be determined to make up for consecutive losses to Lake Wendouree during season 2016, after being held by the Lakers to a combined total of just two goals in Rounds 2 and 8.
The Preliminary Final kicks off at 3pm on Sunday, August 14 at White Flat.
