We take a look at the upcoming Preliminary Finals in Division 2 and 3 this weekend.
James Szabo previews the finals.
Division Two
A spot in the Division Two Grand Final is up for grabs in this week’s Victorian Women’s Football League Preliminary Final, between Chirnside Park and Seaford.
The winner will face VU Western Spurs for the ultimate prize on Sunday the 21st of August, after they beat Chirnside Park in last week’s Semi Final by four points.
While Chirnside Park couldn’t get the desired result, they were able to take some positives away from the tight contest.
Kanisha Thomas, Rachael Palmer, Cassandra Graczyk, Emily Wilkinson, Sammi Bullas and Kayla Toomer all put in good performances and will be hoping to continue that form against Seaford on Sunday.
Seaford booked their place in the Preliminary final after a big win over the Sunbury Lions by eight goals in the elimination final last weekend.
The Tigerettes were helped by the likes of Claire Weiss, Teagan Sheldon, Lucy Jukes, Margaret Hare, Cara Mackey and Michelle Densley – who slotted an impressive three goals.
The game is expected to be a tight contest once again, with Chirnside Park getting over the line by just eight points last time the sides met back in Round 13.
The Preliminary Final starts from 2.00PM this Sunday, August 14 at Frankston Oval.
Division Three
It’s Ajax up against Fitzroy in the Division Three Victorian Women’s Football League Preliminary Final this weekend.
Ajax will look to put last week’s massive defeat in the Semi Final behind them, after they went down by 105 points to the minor premiers Gippsland.
Ajax will have to rely on the likes of Maya Glikfeld and Danielle Robinson to perform once again, after they had consistently good seasons and worked hard all day in the loss.
Mikaela Grek, Ally Bild, Chelsea Fisher and Amy Sekler also played well last game and will need to be at their best to overcome the impressive Fitzroy.
Fitzroy booked their place in the Preliminary Final after recording a comfortable 33-point win in last week’s Elimination final against SKOB Saints.
Fitzroy went into the game as underdogs after losing to the Saints twice throughout the year, but were able to dominate the opposition with the help of their stars Jane Gibson, Tash Ross-Harris, Matilda Arthur and Hannah Coffey.
The team’s top goal kickers for the year, Ashleigh Riddell and Elizabeth Olney, also played well and finished with four goals between them for the day.
It’s hard to pick a favourite in this one and looks like it may be another close contest.
Ajax came up with the four points the first time these two sides met back in Round 2, although Fitzroy won the rematch by a point in Round 9.
The winner will face Gippsland in the Grand Final in two weeks’ time.
The Preliminary Final starts from 2.00PM this Sunday, August 14 at Bill Lawry Oval.
