ACU Fitzroy Football Club has been crowned winners in the Inaugural Hipster Cup, after a narrow win over the Brunswick Renegades.
The match was played under lights at Victoria Park in Collingwood, with beards, fixies, and Dejour jeans popular with fans of the two inner city rivals.
Brunswick entered the game as narrow favourites, after defeating Fitzroy in their two previous encounters.
But it was soon evident that Fitzroy had improved significantly over the summer, with their youth and leg speed proving a challenge for the more experienced Brunswick side.
Fitzroy took the lead at the start of the third term, and while the Renegades controlled much of the play, their inability to convert proved costly, as they registered three points for the quarter.
Fitzroy’s slick handballs and strong defence stifled play in the final quarter and saw them take home the silverware.
The best player for the losing team was Kelly Dungate, who kicked Brunswick’s only goal and took strong marks across the half-forward line. Miranda ‘Hanging Rock’ Weir and Bridie ‘Guns’ Velik-Lord were also strong in the ruck for Brunswick, while Clare Woodhouse, Adele Breznor, Anna Morrow and Kate Sullivan were tenacious in the centre.
Arthur and Field were the goal kickers for Fitzroy and their captain Alexa Madden hoisted the Hipster Cup before a boisterous crowd.
Brunswick will be looking to avenge the defeat when the next take on Fitzroy at home on Sunday July 3.
Fitzroy 2.6 (18) defeated Brunswick 1.7 (13).
