The final VWFL fixtures for 2016 have been released, with the South East and Goldfields divisions now online.
The addition of these divisions has been designed to help clubs in these regions establish themselves with more localised competitions and flexibility around playing numbers.
AFL Victoria has worked closely with both AFL South East and Goldfields Commissions to establish these new competitions to further develop women’s football in both regions.
The Goldfields division will feature three new teams, with Lake Wendouree, East Point and Maryborough & Castlemaine District Football Netball League all fielding a side in the division. Kyneton and Bachus Marsh will return and complete the five team competition.
In the South East the division will welcome new clubs Beaconsfield, Edithvale – Aspendale, Mornington, Mt Eliza and Warragul Colts. Hallam returns while Rosebud and Endeavour Hills will field second teams and Seaford a third side in the competition.
With the new competition to feature in the Goldfields region, the Ballarat Football Netball League will play a key role in managing the division in 2016.
“AFL Goldfields and the Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football Netball League are thrilled to partner with the VWFL for the launch of the new localised Open Aged Women’s competition made up from clubs across our Region,” Aaron Nunn, AFL Goldfields Commercial and Operations Manager said.
“The growth of female football across AFL Goldfields has been an exciting development for our game and to provide a competition structure to cater for the demand of open aged female competitive football is a huge step forward in the growth of the game and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.
In the South East, Region General Manager Jeremy Bourke sees the establishment of the new division as “a watershed moment in the ongoing evolution of female football in the region.”
“The extraordinary growth seen in junior and youth girls over the past few years has culminated in one of the first ever regional based open aged female competition in Victoria.
“The competition has been widely and enthusiastically embraced by leagues, clubs and players and we look forward to continued expansion of the competition in years to come.”
