2016 will be a big year for the recently renamed Victorian University Western Spurs Women’s Football Team (formerly VU St Albans).
Not only will the club join the new VFL state league for women, it will call Footscray’s Henry Turner North Reserve home for 2016 and beyond.
Maribyrnong City Council, in partnership with Victoria University, welcomes the VU Western Spurs as the only female state league team in Melbourne’s western region.
“This is a very exciting time for our club,” senior coach Debbie Lee said.
“Moving forward, the Spurs will be a stand-alone club known as the Victoria University Western Spurs (Inc).
“We have also entered into a refreshed partnership with Victoria University and into a new partnership with the Maribyrnong City Council.”
Lee said the VU Western Spurs will be a club for all in the west, and thanked those at the club that helped drive the changes, including club President Karen Hayes who has driven the strategy to strengthen the Spurs.
“We are delighted by the enthusiasm and support from both Maribyrnong City Council and Victoria University. The opportunities here in Maribyrnong for recruitment as well as the development of players, in not only sport but also in education, are great. It is a time we are excited and proud to be part of.”
The bold move will see the team as the only women’s football club in the City of Maribyrnong, which will allow them to engage with the entire region. It also gives the club the chance to be part of Victoria University’s sports science, education and football programs.
“Maribyrnong City Council has been really supportive,” Lee said.
“They are really enthusiastic and keen to support women in sport, which we are really excited about.”
The VU Western Spurs are also happy to announce that Jordan Roughead (Western Bulldogs AFL vice captain) has come on board as a senior assistant coach in 2016 after first joining the coaching panel in 2015.
The Mayor of the City of Maribyrnong, Cr Cameron McDonald, said that Council welcomes the VU Western Spurs to the City as part of Council’s Active Maribyrnong program.
“Our community absolutely love their sport and they love being active,” McDonald siad.
“Council is in a privileged position to create recreational opportunities, ensuring ALL of our community has access to sport. It is our pleasure to partner with the VU Western Spurs and VU to give women in our community the opportunity to engage in football with a group of such accomplished and welcoming women.”
Victoria University’s Sport Services Manager Scott Cashmere said, “The new partnership further consolidates the long standing affiliation between VU and the Spurs in an exciting era in women’s Australian Rules Football.”
The VU Western Spurs is looking for players of all ages (under 13 to open age) to join the club in 2016. Email info@westernspurs.com.au or phone 0406 621 699 for more information.
