The final home-and-away round for VWFL Premier Division takes place this Sunday, with the fifth-placed St Kilda Sharks still in contention to snatch a spot in the finals.
The equations are simple – the Sharks win, they are in and lose and they miss out. If Eastern Devils and Melbourne Uni lose, it will come down to percentage between the two to see who makes the finals
Let’s take a look at the Round 15 match-ups:
Darebin (13-1) vs VU St Albans (0-14) (AH Capp Reserve):
Darebin has had a dominant year, wrapping up the minor premiership several weeks ago and losing only once, to Melbourne University by 19 points way back in Round 2. The Falcons will only get stronger this week too, as they welcome back stars who participated in the AFL Women’s Exhibition Game last weekend such as Daisy Pearce, Katie Brennan and Darcy Vescio among others, but will miss Aasta O’Connor who was injured in that game. Bottom-of-the-table VU St Albans will be looking to finish off the season competitively in this one.
Melbourne University (7-7) vs Diamond Creek (9-5) (Main Oval):
While Diamond Creek already has second place – and a date with Darebin next week – sewn up, this match is very important for fourth-placed Melbourne University. Due to poor percentage, a loss to Uni would open the door for the St Kilda Sharks – one game behind it on the ladder – to claim a finals berth. Uni would take confidence from its two previous meetings with Diamond Creek though, having defeated them by 50 points in Round 3 and losing by just eight points more recently in Round 12. However current form points towards a Creekers win, with Uni coming off a 145-point defeat to Darebin, and Diamond Creek having defeated St Kilda. The Creekers will however have to overcome the loss of Tiarna Ernst, another injury victim from the AFL game last week.
St Kilda Sharks (6-8) vs Eastern Devils (7-7) (Peanut Farm Reserve):
There’s so much on the line in this one. With a better percentage than both teams one game above it on the ladder, fifth-placed St Kilda simply needs to win against Eastern to snatch a spot in the finals next week. While the Sharks were sitting pretty in second position after Round 10, four straight losses – including one to the Devils by 10 points in Round 12 – has put the club in an all-or-nothing situation. However, the return of Brianna Davey – who has not played since being injured in that Round 10 clash - from the Women’s Exhibition Game will certainly help St Kilda’s cause here. Meanwhile, Eastern will be just as keen to claim the four premiership points. As the Devils are even on wins with Melbourne University, a Uni win means a loss in this match would see Eastern drop from third to fifth and out of finals action.
