Diamond Creek shrugged off the Eastern Devils to secure an important Round 5 victory, while Darebin and Melbourne Uni also tasted success, writes Bess Keaney.
Diamond Creek overpowers Eastern Devils
Diamond Creek have jumped to third place on the VWFL ladder following Sunday’s victory over Eastern Devils at Mulgrave Reserve.
Building on last week’s win over St Albans, the Creekers pulled away with the game in the final quarter, finishing 10.12 (72) to Eastern Devils’ 7.7 (49).
Diamond Creek coach Brad Lederman lauded the Devil’s ball movement, but said it his side’s physicality that got them over the line.
He was particularly pleased with the performances of some of his newcomers, naming Lauren Brazzale and Ellie Koiker among his side’s best.
Rebekah Sibenaler was another standout, bagging five goals in the Creekers’ third win of the season.
Eastern Devils coach Brendan Major was positive about his side’s performance against the ‘very physical’ Creekers but lamented injuries to key personnel.
Ruckwoman Elizabeth Kearney was forced off the field in the third quarter with concussion after a heavy clash that meant that his side were down on rotations coming into the final term.
Amongst his side’s best he counted Meg Hutchins, Jamiee Lambert and Sarah McNamara.
The result means that the two sides are now equal on points with Melbourne Uni, after three wins and two losses apiece.
Diamond Creek hold a narrow lead over the Devils on percentage, as the competition enters its second rotation of the season.
Darebin too good for St Kilda
Darebin has pulled a game clear on the top of the ladder after prevailing over St Kilda at home on Sunday.
The Sharks were no match for the Falcons, going down 6.4 (40) to 17.8 (110).
Katie Brennan was instrumental in the Falcons’ win, booting an equal match-high four goals and finishing in her side’s best, along with Darcy Vescio and Daisy Pearce, who each kicked two.
Brennan’s four-goal haul was not enough to edge St Kilda’s Moana Hope off the perch as the league’s leading goal scorer, with the Sharks’ forward also finishing with four.
Jenna Bruton, Sarah Chapman and Brianna Davey put in strong performances for the Sharks, but couldn’t get their side over the line against the league leaders.
Melbourne Uni win at home
Melbourne Uni have edged into second place on the ladder following Sunday’s win over St Albans at home.
The Spurs were unable to notch up their first win of the season, going down 3.2 (20) to Mugars 17.13 (115) on Sunday.
Melbourne Uni recovered from last week’s narrow loss to St Kilda, putting in a solid performance across the board. Ellie Blackburn, Madeline Keryk and Emma Kearney were among the side’s best, while three goals apiece from Hannah Ibrahim, Louise Stephenson and Kearney meant that the Mugars on field pressure was reflected on the scoreboard.
Alexandra Quigley kicked two of the Spurs’ three goals, and Danni Teasdale and Bree White were strong on field in the side’s loss.
St Albans take on fifth-placed St Kilda in their next encounter, hoping to secure their first points of the season.
