Excitement is building in North East Victoria for the arrival of the Victorian Women’s Football League tomorrow.
The top-of-the-table clash between the Eastern Devils and reigning premier Darebin will be fought out at Wangaratta’s Norm Minns Oval at 4.30pm to help celebrate the significant growth of female football in the region.
The newly created Youth Girls competition will be held before the historic match that sees some of the biggest names return to where it all began.
Falcons stars Daisy Pearce (Bright) and Darcy Vescio (Wangaratta), and young gun Georgia Holden (Myrtleford), all hail from North East Victoria.
The much anticipated match will not only provide local girls a chance to see the VWFL in person but will also offer an insight into the premiership race.
The Devils are currently undefeated after three rounds, while the Falcons have showed glimpses of their best despite losing to Melbourne Uni in Round 2.
Pearce said it was fantastic to be part of a match that carried such significance.
“My nieces play in the local Youth Girls competition and will be playing beforehand so it’s great to be able to come watch them and then take to the field ourselves.”
“For myself, Darcy and Georgia we are really excited to be helping spread the word about female football in North East Victoria and show the young girls that they can aspire to play in a high standard senior competition.”
“A huge number of the girls who have been picked to play for the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne will be playing in Wangaratta on Saturday which is great for the region to have some the best female footballers in Australia playing locally.”
Pearce said despite the Falcons’ imposing record it was the Devils who deserved to start favourite.
“The Devils have started really strongly and defeated Melbourne Uni who we lost to, so they would have to be the favourites.”
“It’s been a really even start to the season which is really exciting and our girls know they are going to have to be at their best to win this one.”
AFL Victoria North East Border will be running a number of come and try training sessions and club workshops with the aim to establish a women’s competition in the North East Border in 2016
