Last month VU St Albans Spurs were recognised for their contribution to sport in their local region at the Brimbank Sports Awards.
The Council awards highlight the importance of health, wellbeing, and an active lifestyle within the local community, while celebrating the contributions made by teams and individuals who shape sport and recreation.
St Albans received the Most Improved Club award, highlighted on the presentation evening as a role model in the local community.
Club executive member Erin Smith said it was pleasing for the club to be recognised at the awards, with their recent trip to the USA receiving high praise and support by the council.
“To see the idea of taking women’s football overseas and providing the opportunity for those at our club to participate in an exhibition in the USA come to fruition is a credit to the hard work of a number of people,” Smith said.
“It was a great experience for the club creating partnerships and networking with people that came on board and sponsored the trip to make it happen.
“We had already built some strong relationships with USAFL when we hosted them a month prior when they were in Australia for International Cup, so it was great to visit them on their home turf.”
Embarking on their 10 day tour last August, the Spurs became the first senior women's Australian Rules Football team to play internationally, and the first to ever take the game to the United States.
The club credited Brimbank Council for being one of the biggest drivers of sport and recreation. A key focus for council has been ensuring disadvantaged people within Brimbank have the opportunity to participate in sport after recent figures showed high rates of obesity and diabetes in the region.
VU St Albans Spurs strong strategic plan and partnership with Victoria University also highlighted the way in which the club had increased their player recruitment and provided access to great facilities including Victoria University and the Whitten Oval.
