AFL Victoria will showcase women’s football this weekend, as the VWFL All Stars play the ADF All Stars in their traditional Anzac Day weekend match.
Entering its fifth year, some of the best female footballers from across the State will take to the field representing the VWFL at Shepley Oval this Sunday, attempting to turn the tables on the ADF that has won the annual match the last two years, retaining the Anzac Cup.
The ADF All Stars, representing Army, Navy and Air Force, have won three of the four clashes, and will face a VWFL All Stars team - coached by Melbourne Uni's Laura Kane - keen to claim the Cup for the first time since 2012.
On Monday night the VWFL All Stars team was finalised, comprising of players from a record 17 teams across divisions 1-4, East and West.
Female Football Manager Darren Flanigan was pleased with the number of players that nominated for the game across the divisions.
“It’s an outstanding endorsement of the willingness of girls to try out for such an exciting opportunity.
“The team selection process for the game this year was the toughest it has been across the four years, and all the women selected should be honoured to play in this annual game on such an important weekend, where we respect and honour our original Anzacs and those who have served our country over the years.”
The game will start at 11:30am, with the Youth Girls clash between Cranbourne and Beaconsfield the curtain raiser match at 10am.
The Anzac Cup game will be the second clash between the VWFL and ADF over the weekend, with a select group of players chosen to participate in an AFL 9s match between the two teams at half time on Saturday at the MCG during Collingwood versus Essendon match.
Flanigan said with a huge crowd expected for the original Anzac Day clash, it will be a great opportunity to showcase women’s football.
“The players chosen were selected on fundamental skills set and athleticism.
“It’s a great opportunity to recognise the contribution women make in the ADF and to celebrate women’s footy.”
