Football clubs are a great place to develop friendships.
Jaimee-Lee Wilson and Lisa Kirby can attest to that.
Having met at the Sunbury Lions FC in 2006, they now class themselves as best friends.
It is fitting then that this weekend both share their 150th game milestone together when they play Melton in Round 1 of the new East Division in the VWFL.
Wilson has been a life long Sunbury player, joining the club in 2003, with a list of accolades including Most Improved Player 2003, Premiership Player 2009/2010, Best Finals Player 2013 and most importantly is a Life Member of the club.
Never keen to be the centre of attention, Wilson is nervous leading up to the milestone game but is glad she has Kirby to share the limelight with who she is full of praise for.
“Is a great achievement for both of us …to share it with one of my best mates and closest friends at the football club and get to enjoy it jointly is great,” Wilson said.
“(Lisa is) very loyal. Definitely loyal to the club, and to anyone that treats her right.
“There is nothing Lisa cannot do (on the field). Kick goals, save goals, shepherd, she is an all rounder.”
Looking back over her career, Wilson has fond memories of her first of two premierships with Sunbury.
“Definitely the 2009 Grand Final - all the hard work in the years beforehand, and to be competitive in finals almost every year up until that date, definitely all the hard work paid off.”
Wilson thanks the clubs opponents this weekend, Melton, who kindly enabled Sunbury swap the game to Sunbury so the women could celebrate the milestone match at home.
Best of luck to both players in game 150.
Kirby's career: Started her senior career with Darebin Falcons in 2003 then moved to Sunbury Lions in 2006. She won the best 1st year player and most consistent in 2006. In 2007 was the runner up Best and Fairest before winning the club best and Fairest award in 2009 – the premiership year for Sunbury. Adding to that she was the best on ground in the 2010 Grand Final victory, 2011 won the Mel Power award, B&F Runner up and 100 game milestone, 2012 B&F winner. 2013 B&F runner up and won Mel Power award and is a Life Member.
