Will the 2014 unbeaten run of the Darebin Falcons continue on Grand Final day to claim back to back premierships or will Diamond Creek again spoil the party as they did in 2012?
All will be decided as the top two teams meet for the fourth time this season in the 2014 Cottons VWFL Premier Division Grand Final.
There is no doubting Darebin has been the form side this season, highlighted by a 12-0 finish to the season and an average winning margin of 135 points. On only three occasions did a team get closer than 12 goals to Darebin in the home and away rounds, with Diamond Creek getting to within 57 (Round 1) and 51 (Round 9).
Diamond Creek finished the season in second spot, with only the two defeats – both to Darebin. They experienced some close games against eventual finalists St Kilda and Melbourne Uni during the season, but were able to finish two games clear in second to claim the double chance.
When Darebin and Diamond Creek met in the Semi Final a fortnight ago, the margin was reduced to 34 points. Diamond Creek led at quarter time, but a scoreless second quarter gave the Falcons the advantage and they did not let the Creekers get back into the match in the second half.
Diamond Creek faced Melbourne Uni last weekend, and were able to record a strong 26-point win with a blistering six goal to nil third term to claim a Grand Final spot.
Their opponents feature a star studded lineup boasting 11 players from the AFL Women’s Exhibition match from earlier this year. This list is highlighted by the clubs three leading goal kickers Katie Brennan (55 goals), Rebecca Privitelli (30) and Darcy Vescio (26), along with captain Daisy Pearce in the midfield and Aasta O’Connor in the ruck.
Diamond Creek have been able to produce great team performances right throughout the season, and despite not having its top three goal kickers amass over 100 goals for the season, the number of scoring options has been a strength for the Creekers this year. Brittany Grech has led the way with 31 goals, with Stacey Cross (25) and Stephanie Chiocci (11) all providing the key targets last weekend with nine goals between them.
