As is the case in all Cottons VWFL Grand Final matches this weekend, the top two teams will meet in the Division 1 Grand Final, with Melbourne Uni and St Kilda to go head to head in the final game of the season.
Both finished the home and away rounds with 11 wins and three defeats, separated by 27%. Uni had the upper hand this season over St Kilda during the home and away rounds, with two wins from two match ups. This trend continued in the Semi Finals, but if the final margins of eight points (Round 2), 15 points (Round 8) and one solitary point (decided by golden point in Semi Final) are anything to go by, we are set for a close, tight Grand Final match to kick of a big day of action at Coburg City Oval this weekend.
A pleasing aspect for both clubs this year was having their Premier Division sides in the finals as well. Both met in Week 1 of the finals, with Melbourne Uni progressing to the Preliminary Final stage before being beaten by Diamond Creek last week.
But now it is time for their Division 1 sides to possibly bring home a premiership cup.
Melbourne Uni is currently on a six game winning streak heading into the Grand Final, with its last loss in Round 9 against the Eastern Devils. After winning five in a row towards the end of the season, St Kilda lost back to back matches to end the home and away season, and start its finals campaign. They returned to the winners list last week by 12 points against Eastern Devils, and will now be hoping to avenge a golden point result against Uni, which saw their opponent’s progress through to the Grand Final with a score 90 seconds into extra time after they were tied when the final siren was set to be sounded.
Despite having an extraordinary 52 players for through the Division 1 side this season, the club believes they have been able to adapt to the changes thrown up on a weekly basis.
“It’s been strong season from start to finish.
“Although we had a number of players through the Division 1 side, we were able to adapt and continue to play the same style of football week in week out.
“We couldn't ask for much more than top spot and a place in the Grand Final.”
For St Kilda, the inclusion of more experienced players this year has helped the club with depth, as they have pushed players up to the senior side with 47 players having played in the side this year, led by Sarah Drew and Keryn Ralph who have played all 16 games in 2014.
