Wyndhamvale has completed the perfect season, winning all 13 home and away and finals games to claim the Cottons VWFL Division 3 Grand Final title last Sunday against Whitehorse.
The raging favourites entering the Grand Final were made to fight for a clean sweep of results for 2014, with the fourth placed Whitehorse Colts not believing in their underdog status, as the game went right down to the wire with the Falcons prevailing 5.5 35 to 4.6 30.
Whitehorse got off to the perfect start in the Grand Final, with Bridget O’Connell giving the Colts the early lead. This was short lived as the forward targets for Wyndhamvale started to emerge, as the Falcons kicked three of the last four goals for the quarter – two going the way of Kayla Slattery – to give them an eight point quarter time lead.
After five goals in the first term, a high scoring game looked on the cards, but it would not come to fruition as only another four goals would be scored for the game – two of those coming in the second term as the sides kicked one apiece to see the Falcons half time lead reduced to five points.
The defensive matchups made scoring difficult, but when Sarah Clough managed to kick her first for Whitehorse, suddenly the Colts were within a point of Wyndhamvale, and the game was in the balance.
When Slattery kicked her third, it would be the last goal scored for the match, as the Falcons clung to a seven point lead at three quarter time.
Never has a goalless quarter been so enthralling as the Colts threw everything possible at the undefeated Falcons in the final term. While Whitehorse kept the ladder leaders scoreless in the final term, it was down the other end of the ground that the game was won, and it was not the forwards that did it.
The Falcons defence showed why it had only conceded 196 points for the season, as they repelled every Colts attack. Two behinds were all Whitehorse was able to show for the final term, as Wyndhamvale held on by their fingertips for the final siren to sound.
The scenes when it did sound were a large sigh of relief for the Falcons, as they knew they had been made to earn the perfect season.
