Seaford capitalised on a slow starting Kew to win the 2014 VWFL Division 5 Grand Final on Sunday at Coburg City Oval, as Matthew Cocks reports.
A dominant opening quarter from the Tigerettes set-up the 13-point victory, with the Giants finding themselves on the back-foot early.
Constantly under pressure, Kew continually turned the ball over, with it rarely taken out of Seaford’s attacking fifty.
The Tigerettes held a 22-point lead at quarter-time, with Kew yet to impact the scoreboard.
As the Grand Final nerves settled for the Giants, they started to work their way back into the contest.
Joelle Metres used her pace and skill around the stoppages to get the ball moving forward, which allowed Kew to gain momentum.
Increased forward pressure restricted Seaford to just one behind in the second term, although they still had a 15-point buffer at the main break.
The intensity of the match lifted in the second-half, with the Tigerettes attacking the football in a bid to regain control.
Desperation saw the momentum shift back into the hands of Seaford and they could have put the game beyond doubt if they had been accurate.
Eight scoring opportunities only resulted in three goals, which were kicked by Tigerette, Aimee Mellford.
Down by 32-points at three-quarter time, the Giants faced an uphill battle to cause an upset.
With nothing to lose and all to gain, Kew started to take more risks in the final term, shifting momentum back in their favour, which gave them a glimmer of hope.
With their defence under siege, Seaford’s Tamara Peck stood-up, intercepting a number of Kew’s kicks into the forward-line.
The game was alive right up until the final siren but the Giant’s scoreless first term came back to bite them, with Seaford winning 6.10-46 to 5.3-33.
A solid four-quarter effort from Metres, saw her named best-on-ground.
