Frequently asked questions
I don’t think my work background and experience is relevant. Is it still worth my effort to apply?
Yes. As long as you meet the basic criteria your information will be reviewed. Remember that a comprehensive 16-week course is provided to improve knowledge, skills and dexterity.
I have never undergone the BEEP TEST before and I am not sure I will be able to pass the benchmark?
Have a go at it at in your own time but preferably with someone else to push you along. Use a partner, friend or trainer to help you. If you are unable to obtain a copy of the beep test CD then simulate it as much as possible with your training. (e.g. Mark out a line 20 metres apart and train between those lines progressively getting faster each minute).
Take advantage of the trials. You can participate in trials during the Women in Fire-fighting information sessions without the pressure of a pass or fail benchmark.
Are the recruitment benchmarks the same for women as they are for men?
Yes. The recruitment benchmarking is the same for everyone, regardless of gender, age or cultural background. It is an expectation of our community that all career firefighters have the same level of competence and capability.
Where should I focus my preparation?
CFA recommends a holistic approach to preparation for the recruitment process. For a number of women the physical challenge has proven to be the most challenging part of the recruitment process. Our ‘Practise Challenge’ is an essential self-assessment tool and can help you further prepare for success. Please refer to our Physical Assessment and Information Guide (found under forms and guides).
I have no exposure to holding fire hoses or climbing high ladders. Will this hold me back?
Information is available on the simulated firefighter challenge testing. This simulated course represents some of the basic skills of a firefighter. Although you do not have to be perfect, you will still need a reasonable level of competence in order to be successful.
Arrange a visit to a CFA integrated Fire Station where you can be shown some of the equipment used in the role. Take advantage of the CFA 'PractiseChallenge' demonstration to measure where you fit in. Then use it to adjust your preparation for the Challenge activities. If you have difficulties with the 64mm hose haul, the hose drag or the dummy drag then these should form the focus of your training.
Upper body strength is an important requirement to perform competently in this role. Some women find they need to do extra physical training in order to achieve these requirements. CFA employed its first female Career Firefighter in 1995. Currently we have female Career Firefighters working throughout our outer metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victorian integrated Fire Stations and you can enquire in your local area about arranging a visit on station to discuss their approach to the recruitment process and their careers.
I do not currently play any sport or train regularly, can I still apply?
This could make your preparation a little harder but should not deter you. Time may be a consideration depending on what your base level is. Many local gyms can give you a basic fitness assessment and could also help you with establishing a training regime that will not only put you in good stead for the recruitment process but also carry over if you are successful in obtaining an ongoing position.
I am a mum. Would I still need to live away for 16 weeks at Fiskville for training?
Yes, all our successful applicants attend live in training for a 16 week period. We understand that it would be a big commitment to be away from the family home for four nights a week, however the 16 weeks is a short sacrifice in terms of a career which has a great work life balance.

I have never driven a truck. Will this be a disadvantage?
Many of the applicants applying regardless of gender have also never driven a truck. Although it is not a prerequisite it is an important element of the job. You can investigate what is involved with the test and lessons with a training provider. Details can be obtained from the VicRoads website. Obtaining a HEAVY RIGID driver’s license is an essential criterion of the job and needs to be required before commencement.
What about risks of firefighting and reproductive health?
Firefighters, male or female can face hazards to their health in the course of their work so the risks are probably equal.
CFA is committed to meeting its obligations under the OH&S Act and supports best practice safety review mechanisms to ensure that the health and safety of our members is protected at all times.
Can you still be a firefighter if you are pregnant?
Yes. Discussions are held with the Officer in Charge in conjunction with medical advice about when and how to approach light duties etc. CFA has had female firefighters who have had babies and then returned to normal duties after maternity leave has concluded.
The process seems complex and difficult. Is it worth the effort?
Overcoming challenges is part of being a good fire fighter. In addition to personal challenges there will be many more challenges that form part of this emergency services role. The role of career fire-fighter requires a high level of skill and commitment. This is a highly sought after role and only the best and most dedicated make it through. The answers to these questions can really only come from you.
