AFL Victoria Media Release
AFL Victoria is pleased to announce the promotion of the Bendigo Women’s Football Club to the Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL) Premier Division for the 2014 season.
While discussions are continuing as to the final make up of Premier Division next year, the promotion of Bendigo Thunder was ratified after a meeting with the club’s committee in late September.
The Thunder finished the 2013 North West Division 1 season undefeated, claiming their second consecutive premiership.
AFL Victoria State League and Talent Manager John Hook said the promotion of the Bendigo Women’s Football Club was aligned with the objective to deliver the highest standard of football in the state’s top female football competition and to continue to encourage participation throughout regional Victoria.
Bendigo President Beth Taylor said everyone at the club was thrilled with the promotion to the Premier Division.
“After two great seasons we were looking at stepping up in 2014 and to be promoted to the highest level of woman’s football in the state is fantastic,” Taylor said.
“This is an exciting time not only for the Bendigo Thunder but also for female footballers in country Victoria, who can now play at the elite level in a regionally-based team.”
AFL Victoria will assume all responsibilities concerned with governing the VWFL as of November 1 and is committed to providing the best possible senior women’s competition possible.
