Sitting on top of the world with a 16-game winning streak and 1st on the ladder at the end of the home and away season, the Scoresby Magpies secured the 2013 flag against Keysborough in the South East yesterday.
The sun was out and the air was warm as the Magpies put on a show filled with determination and talent. The first quarter panned out as expected, both sides locking horns and trying not to give away any majors on the scoreboard. Then, the Magpies lifted above the Burras in the second term, tripling their original score while managing to keep the Burras silent.
However, the match was far from over as the half time break finished and the Burras took the field in an effort for a comeback – winning the third quarter. Alas, the Burra sprint was to no avail, as the Magpies dominated the last term slotting through 4 majors and 7 minor scores. Although the record for the last quarter remains inefficient on the Magpies behalf, they controlled the flow of the match and didn’t allow the Burras to have a touch of the footy.
The key element to success for the entire season worked wonders for the Magpies in the grand final as they used their impressive teamwork to control the course of the match and work in their favour for the majority of each quarter. Every Magpie managed to contribute their fair share of work as they got across the line on the day. All nine goals were shared between six Magpies, which showed the level of team cohesion they utilised across the ground to win the game.
Chris Di Ciero performed her best on the sunny pitch, as she remained relentless in the contest from the start to the final siren – aptly awarded with best on ground for the Magpies.
The Burras put together a monumental season of home and away footy, finishing up on second spot on the ladder deservedly. The match up with the Magpies saw the two of best teams in the South East meet in a grand final that was bound with great anticipation. Both sides created a spectacular display of footy and put their best on the field for the most important date of the year.
Roslyn Hubeek has been the Burras go-to-girl for the most of the second half of this year’s season, a renowned gun for the side. Reliable and tough, Roslyn was named best on ground for the Burras yesterday.
This season has generated a never seen before rivalry between these two clubs as they clash at the top of the ladder, they met in the semi finals and have now fought it out in a grand final. Next year these two sides will be the teams to watch, but for now, Magpies have the upper hand and will go into next season with a premier edge over the entire South East league.
