Zhou Mi (Hong Kong) was listed on the BWF world ranking list published on Thursday 29th October as NUMBER ONE.
New Zealand is very priviledged to have a world number one coming here to play in our KLRC New Zealand Open. Zhou Mi's rise to the top of the world started here in New Zealand at the 2007 KLRC New Zealand Open.
Zhou Mi played here in May last year, she was unseeded as she was ranked in the 90's was coming back from injury, had been struggling to find any form posting some poor performances and had decided to represent Hong Kong after China did not want her any more.
Zhou Mi found her form in New Zealand, defeated the then no. 7 in the world Pi Hongyan from France in the semi-final and then Chie Umezu from Japan in the final. After winning the tournament Dato Andrew Kam from KLRC had a short discussion with Zhou Mi, telling her that she could be number one in the world; the rest is history......
Since the 2007 KLRC New Zealand Open Zhou Mi has been a KLRC player. She has been supported, given confidence and has had some fantastic results winning the Korean Super-Series, Indian Super-series and the China Masters Super-series events this year.
What a great story this is for this 30 year old who has shown her sponosr and the world just what she is capable of.
See her here in New Zealand at the 2008 KLRC New Zealand Open where of course she is top seed in the women's singles
