Sahara Katene and Hunter Johns on NZ U17 duties

Congratulations to the latest New Zealand representatives to emerge from Harbour Basketball.

Sahara Katene scored a game high 19 points as New Zealand women beat Cook Islands 95-58 in its first outing at the FIBA U17 Oceania Cup in Samoa.

New Zealand Men also beat the Cook Islands (145-37) - Hunter Johns with all the fives (5 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists).

College Basketball

NCAA Division I

Julius Halaifonua was in sparkling form for Georgetown as they defeated Maryland 90-81. Julius equalled his season high of 16 (6/8FG) points as well as adding 9 rebounds plus 4 assists then followed that with 14 points (5/9FG) in an 81-61 loss to North Carolina.

Tom Beattie added 5 rebounds and 3 assists to 11 points as UC San Diego went down 76-70 at Nevada.

Bailey Flavell put together a 22 points, 6rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals stats line in Hawaii’s 68-63 loss to UC Davis.

Jess Moors provided a bit of everything as Florida Atlantic edged Western Kentucky 47-44 in a low scoring affair. Jess finished with 6 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists and a brace of steals.

NCAA Division II

Hannah Wentworth added 4 assists to 15 points as Lynn University edged an overtime win against Palm Beach Atlantic 64-62 to move to 2-1 in Sunshine State Conference play.

Also in the Sunshine State Conference Florida Southern have opened with a pair of wins with Charlie Dalton scoring 10 points in both victories; 101-93 in overtime v St Leo’s and 93-88 against Rollins. 

USCAA

Rocco Chang scored a season high 25 points as Maine Augusta won 94-84 against Word of Life.

Junior College

Aaron Sievert added 4 assists to 19 points as Casper College lost 79-75 to Utah State Eastern.

Joel Brown, on 6 from 8 shooting, scored  a season high 14 points as Temple College went down 108-75 to Midland College.

Lizzie May produced her first double-double of the season (11 points and 4 rebounds) to help Raritan College to a 65-45 win against Salem College.

Despite Highland, Illinois being overpowered 65-39 by Malcolm X College Mania Watson filled the stats line with 8 points and 5 rebounds plus pairs in assists, steals and blocks.

Making a pair of threes Maya Fowler tallied 6 points and 4 rebounds as Collin College beat Dallas Mountain View 97-51.

Allen College were defeated 79-65 by Crowder with Hikki Gear making 6 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in the loss.

In the Pro’s.

The men’s professional leagues around the world were back in action last week after the FIBA internationals break.

Sam Mennenga scored 16 points to take his Breakers career tally past 600 points as the BNZ Breakers made it three wins on the bounce and four from the last five outings with a 99-86 win over the Tasmania Jack Jumpers at Spark Arena. The victory, the 350th in the club’s history, lifts the Breakers into sixth spot on the NBL ladder with a 7-10 record.

Tai Webster, back in Breakers colours for the first time in 1,553 days, scored 5 points off the bench.

Isaac Fotu and Yanni Wetzell went head to head in the Japanese League with Isaac’s Utsunomiya Brex coming out on top in the double-header match up. Isaac scored 21 points in the 86-81 win and added 11 rebounds to 19 points in an 84-78 victory.

Despite being on the losing side in both games Yanni put up really good numbers with 13 points and 13 rebounds followed by 27 points and 5 rebounds.

James Moors had a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds as Traiskirchen Lions were beaten 91-76 by Steel Gunners Oberwart in the Austrian League.

In the Australian WNBL Akiene-Tera Reed scored 9 points in Southside Melbourne Flyers fell 75-67 t0 Bendigo Spirit.
