Weekly Wrap - Westlake Girls and Rosmini College medal at Nationals

Westlake Girls High School were crowned the 2024 Girl’s ‘AA’ Secondary Schools National Champions at Fly Palmy Arena, Palmerston North on Saturday. Westlake beat St Andrew’s College, Christchurch 97-69 to claim the C.A.Clarke and Stone Trophy for the third straight year

They join Church College and Mairehau High School as the only girl’s schools to have enjoyed success in three consecutive years. In addition they now sit 4th= on the list of all-time winners behind Church College with 20 titles, Mairehau (9), St Peter’s School, Cambridge (4) and now Westlake joining Christchurch Girls High School with 3 wins each.

Kodee Williams-Sefo led the way for Westlake with 24 points and 13 rebounds while young centre Imani Rasmussen was also in double-double territory with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Emma Schroeder scored 14 points and Zenthia Stowers 18 while captain Amy Pateman, having missed the 2023 championship game due to injury, amassed 17 points.

Kodee was named to the All-Star Five and also received the Tournament MVP Award.

Also in the All-Star Five was Takapuna Grammar School guard Bailey Flavell who led all scorers at the tournament averaging 39.3 points per game. Takapuna finished a highly creditable fifth with Amy McKenzie also enjoying a finetournament averaging 19.8ppg.

The third Harbour school in the girls tournament were Rangitoto College and they finished 24th – Mela Andrews led their scoring averaging 10.5ppg.

In the Boy’s tournament Rosmini College claimed third spot after beating 2023 champions Wellington College 100-81 in the bronze medal game.

It was a seventh top three finish for Rosmini from the last twelve national championships - forward Bart Jackowski was named to the All-Star Five. Bart averaged 16 points per game at the tournament while also averaging in double figures for Rosmini were Chris Wyllie (16.0ppg), Josh Wyllie (14.5ppg), Jameer Reed (13.6ppg) and  Hunter Johns (11.4ppg).

Westlake Boys High, the other Harbour team in the Boy’s Tournament, finished 13th with Noah Rasmussen (18.0ppg) their leading scorer. Also averaging in double figures were Daley Pohio and Troy Supple who both tallied 13 points per game. 

BNZ Northern Kāhu

Defending champions BNZ Northern Kāhu began their Tauihi Aotearoa national league campaign with an 87-78 win against Southern Hoiho at Eventfinda Stadium on Sunday.

Penina Davidson was outstanding for the Kāhu with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. 

The next Kāhu home game is Friday, October 25 at Eventfinda Stadium against Mainland Pouākai. The Rapid League game starts at 6.30pm with the Tauihi fixture tipping-off at 7.30pm.

Breakers and Australian NBL

The BNZ Breakers are currently in the USA playing NBA sides Utah Jazz, Philadelphia 76ers and Oklahoma City Thunder.

In the opening game Sam Mennenga scored 10 points in a 116-87 loss to the Jazz and he followed that with 14 points in the 139-84 loss to the 76ers.

In Round three of the Australian NBL Sam Waardenburg and the Cairns Taipans won both of their fixtures in the round. Sam scored 12 points in a 90-78 defeat of defending champions Tasmania Jack Jumpers and then had 14 points and 7 rebounds in an impressive 101-88 win at Melbourne United.

Melbourne United had earlier in the week thrashed the Wildcats 97-68 in Perth with Rob Loe adding 7 rebounds to 10 points.
