Tall Blacks selection for Dan Fotu plus news of college athletes in USA

Congratulations to Dan Fotu on being named to the Tall Blacks team to take on Lebanon and Jordan in a pair of FIBA World Cup Qualifying games later this month. Both games are in the Middle East with the Lebanon fixture on November 10 and the Jordan game three days later. The Tall Blacks have already qualified for next year’s FIBA World Cup. 

With the American collegiate season getting underway we will be keeping an eye on the action as no fewer than 26 Harbour representative players are on basketball scholarships in the USA right now.

The season kicks in this week but already there have been some standout performances in pre-season games.

Kruz Perrott-Hunt was in fine form as South Dakota University mauled Simpson 101-55. Kruz finished with a game high 24 points (10/15FG, 4/8 3PG) to accompany 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

James Moors led the Colorado State rebounding count as they inflicted a 91-52 defeat on MSU Denver. The junior forward added 6 points, 2 assists and a steal to 10 rebounds.

Boston Caldwell top scored for Central Maine College in its 71-57 win against the University of New Brunswick at St John. The freshman forward scored 18 points on 8 from 12 shooting.

In the pros Breakers forward Rob Loe played his 150th NBL game as the Breakers demolished Tasmania Jack Jumpers 94-62 on Sunday but unfortunately was sidelined within seconds of taking the court after suffering a head knock.

At the other end of the experience scale Sam Waardenburg, in his rookie season as a professional, scored a season high 20 points as Cairns Taipans lost a points-fest at League leaders Sydney Kings 106-103. In a fine all-round game Sam also posted 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a couple of steals. 

In Europe Tai Webster produced 14 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists as Socar Petkimspor defeated Bursaspor 80-72 and improve to 3-2 in the Turkish Super League.

In Germany Matt Freeman scored 10 points and added 6 rebounds although his club Bremerhaven suffered a 73-66 loss to Tuebingen.

Isaac Fotu tallied a team high 17 points (8/13FG) but Tochigi Brex were given something of a hiding by Chiba Jets going down 87-58. The Jets (7-2) lead the East Conference of the Japanese League with Brex (3-6) now sixth.

Tera Reed scored 19 points (5/10FG, 4/4FT) but Tampereen Pyrintö were defeated 82-77 by HBA-Marsky in the Finnish League. Pyrintö have slipped to 2-4 on the season although all four losses have been by 6 points or less.
