Harbour Tall Ferns quintet perform well at William Jones Cup

The Harbour contingent of Tall Ferns will this week return from international duties after claiming a silver medal at the 41stWilliam Jones Cup in Taiwan on Sunday.

Micaela Cocks, Penina Davidson, Ella Fotu and Matangiroa Flavell all played key roles on court whilst Jody Cameron, herself a former Tall Ferns Olympian, was an Assistant Coach on the tour.

With the exception of Micaela the other players are members of the Harbour Breeze squad whilst Jody is Head Coach of the Breeze.

Penina had a fine tournament scoring in double figures in all five games, averaging 15.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per outing with a top score of 20 points against Chinese Taipei A.

Rookies Ella and Matangiroa performed very well on their first Tall Ferns tour.

Unfortunately Matangiroa missed the final two games after suffering an ankle injury in the victory against Chinese Taipei.

Ella enjoyed her debut tour earning a starting role on the team. Her averages of 4.6 points and 3.2 assists per game probably don’t reflect how valuable a team member she was.

“All of our players played a good role but I felt the MVP was probably Ella Fotu who played exceptionally good defence and executed her role in offence beautifully and had officially six assists but I’m sure it was more and she also scored six points,” Tall Ferns Head Coach Guy said of the rookie guard.

Micaela, a former Harbour standout has been based overseas for more than a decade initially playing four years at Oregon University. Since then she has played eight seasons professionally for Townsville Fire in the Australian WNBL winning three championship medals.

She was the leading scorer for New Zealand at the William Jones Cup averaging 17.2 points per game and subsequently named to the All-Star Five Tournament Team.

Next up for the Tall Ferns is a trip to India for the FIBA Asia Cup in seven weeks time. All the players will head back to the practice court as they wait to hear if they have gained selection for that tournament which
